John Ashley Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Emmanuel Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Trail Creek on Mar. 31, 2026.
John David Ashley, known lovingly as John, passed away on March 29, 2026, at Franciscan Health in Michigan City, Indiana, at the age of 67. He was born on July 16, 1958, in Michigan City, Indiana, and lived a life marked by devotion to family, service, friendship, and a warm spirit that touched many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Versie Lee Dabney and Lonnie Dabney, sister, Sabrina Ashley-Nixon, brother Adrian E. Dabney, his grandparents, John and Lillian Franklin, and his cherished granddaughter, LaKaria Denise Ashley; two nephews Olajuwon P. and Orlando L Ashley, one niece LaMattia Ashley, his close friend, Pastor Michael Wright.

He leaves behind a loving family who will forever treasure his memory, including his children, John Ashley Jr., Nakkia (Kevin) Milner-Woods, La Juan Ashley, and Jamaar Ashley. He is also survived by his sisters, Taleathia Hairston, Carol Williams, Sangella "Sandy" Thomas, and Candace "Candy" Dabney, and his brother, Levi "Ricky" Ashley. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends who were blessed to know him.

John valued the bonds of family deeply, and he carried those relationships with him throughout his life. He is also survived by close friends, Cornell Davis, Dennis Nixon, Ray Jackson, Charlotte and Monica. He was especially proud of the love and connection he shared with those closest to him, and his presence brought comfort, laughter, and strength to many.
John attended Elston Isaac High School and later attended college in Louisiana. During his school years, he played basketball, a sport that reflected his energy, determination, and competitive spirit. In his younger years, he worked as a paperboy, and as an adult he built a strong work ethic through his years as a truck driver and landscaper. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served honorably and attained the rank of SP4. His military service was a source of pride, and he carried the discipline and resilience of that experience throughout his life.
John was a man of faith and fellowship who attended Life Temple Church of God in Christ under Pastor Robert Fleming. He found strength in his spiritual life and in the fellowship of his church family. In 1986, while in Texas, he married his best friend, Karen Milner-Ashley, and their bond remained one of enduring friendship and mutual respect. Their relationship stood as a testament to companionship, loyalty, and love that lasted through the years.
John enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and was happiest when surrounded by the people he loved. He enjoyed playing cards and dominoes, attending family gatherings, and having a good old time with those around him. He was known for his easygoing nature, his sense of humor, and his ability to make others feel welcome. He also had a special affection for his dog, Duke, who was a faithful companion and part of his life's story.
Those who knew John will remember a man who worked hard, loved deeply, and valued the importance of family, friendship, and togetherness. His life was a reflection of perseverance, loyalty, and love. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
