John Aultman Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 19, 2025.
John William Aultman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and patriot, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025, at the age of 93. Born in Columbia, SC on December 21, 1931, he grew up in Holly Hill, SC and lived briefly in Savannah and downtown Atlanta. He spent most of his young adult life in Charleston and moved to Atlanta when he was 50 and would spend the rest of his life there.

John proudly served his nation as a member of the U.S. Army, 2nd "Indianhead" Division, fighting in the Korean War, where his courage earned him two Purple Hearts (where he nearly lost his arm). Though his time in the military was brief, his commitment to duty remained a defining part of his character.

He later spent over 35 years as a dedicated U.S. Government Civil Service employee (Military Traffic Command) in support of military families, working tirelessly to reinforce and strengthen the country he so deeply loved.

Above all, John cherished his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he found immense joy in coaching his children and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on in their sports and activities. His presence was a constant source of encouragement, love, and support, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of those he held dear.

John and his beloved wife, Graciela, a native-born Costa Rican, spent 60 wonderful years together, creating countless memories as they traveled and camped side by side. Their bond was a testament to the enduring power of love, companionship and at times, patience, as they could both be equally stubborn!

John had a special place in his heart for dogs, horses and enjoyed woodworking, gardening and bird watching. In his younger years in Charleston, he was fond of skiing, fishing and surprised many with his ease and grace on roller skates. Many will remember him for his quick wit and sense of humor that he kept until the end.

John is survived by his loving family: his two sons, Lin (wife Allison) and Paul (wife Lisa) Aultman; his five grandchildren, Jon Paul (wife Holly) Aultman, Aryn (husband JJ) Farrell, Brandon (wife Katrina) Aultman, Adam Aultman, and Matt Aultman; and his three great-grandchildren, Liliana, Loxely, and Luella. His legacy of love, strength, and dedication will live on through them, as well as through all who had the privilege of knowing him.
