Today I saw on Google alert a paper cited that John and I published in 2002. We collaborated on five papers - a most fruitful collaboration. I only learned today of his passing. My condolences to his family.
He was an extraordinary person in many ways, and it was my good fortune that I met him early in his career and had contacts from time to time. Being a physical organic chemist, I was able to appreciate the depth of his knowledge. My wife is a retired professor of physics and when I mentioned today that I learned from his obituary that his PhD was in physics and chemistry. When I told her this, she said, "You see, he was so good in part because he was a physicist!"
On learning that he was from Berwyn, PA, I realized that we had a geographical connection. I was born and raised in Wilmington, DE and several times passed through Berwyn.
Was John a Quaker? I was wondering because of his connection with AFS. I graduated from Friends School in Wilmington.
