Richburg, NY - John L. Baldwin, 68, of 109 Ackerman Street passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Buffalo Veterans Hospital with his loved ones at his side. He was born January 25, 1946 in Bradford, PA the son of the late Archie and Ethel (Walters) Baldwin. On June 2, 2001 in Wellsville he married Nancy Baumgarten who survives.
John was raised in the Cuba area and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968 and served in Vietnam with CoE 2nd Battalion 1st Marine Division. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and two Purple Hearts. He was a life member and Past Commander of the Morrison Hayes Post 702 American Legion, he was the first Vietnam veteran to serve as Commander of the Allegany County American Legion, he was a life member of the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW, a member of the Amvets Post #1in Cuba and was a member of the 40 and 8. He was first employed at Acme Electric in Cuba and was a dairy farmer. He then began his career with Dresser-Rand Corporation, first in Olean and for 27 years in Wellsville; retiring in 2005. He was a 35 year member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, Local Lodge 1580. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing golf and spending time with his family and friends. Surviving in addition to his wife are six children, Mindy (Eric) Hooper of Farmersville, Amanda (George) Wagner of Tonawanda, Nick (Danielle) Baldwin of Little Genesee, Lee (Kevin) Green and Heidi (Lee) Sadler both of Friendship and Jody Baldwin of Denver, CO, 13 grandchildren, six great Grandchildren, a brother, Don Baldwin of Cuba, a sister, Margie Cadle of Rushford as well as several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased in addition to his parents by a sister, Shirley Baldwin. Friends are invited to call on Tuesday (September 2, 2014) from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. Burial with military honors will follow at 5:00 pm on Tuesday in Richburg Cemetery.
