John Thomas Barton, Sr., 86, of Chesterfield passed away peacefully at his home on September 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Born March 22, 1937, he was the son of the late Guy Arvel and Esta Swaim Barton, and was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Eloise Brock, Mary Turner; and two brothers, Howard Barton and Guy Barton, Jr. He was a member of Chesterfield Community Church for over a decade.

 

After completing his education, John embarked on a career that extended over 25 years as an insurance estimator with State Farm Insurance. He was well-respected in his field, known for his meticulous attention to detail and dedication to providing outstanding service to his clients.

 

Beyond his professional achievements, John was a family man at heart. He cherished every moment spent with his children, and especially, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

 

In his leisure time, John enjoyed gardening and working on projects around his home. One of John's most defining qualities was his willingness to help others. He was always ready to lend a hand to those in need. Whether it was assisting a neighbor with household repairs or offering guidance to a friend in a time of trouble, John's kindness knew no bounds. His memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his spirit will continue to inspire acts of kindness and generosity.

 

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 64 blissful years, Edna Mayton Barton; four children, John Thomas Barton, Jr. and wife, Karen, Debbie Owen and husband, Ricky, Tricia Suddarth and husband, Scott, Kim Flores and husband, Mike; nine grandchildren, Eric Owen and wife, Roma, Katie Talbott and husband, Josh, Jonathan Barton and wife, Jessica, Evan Barton and wife, Amanda, Alex Scott and husband, Dusty, Hailey Van Asch and husband, Logan, Regan Barton and husband, Chris, Sarah Suddarth, Jordan Suddarth; 14 beloved great-grandchildren; two sisters Dorothy Chewning and Jane Crump; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

 

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2023 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes and Crematory, 2033 Boulevard. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral on Monday from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in John’s memory to Chesterfield Community Church, 7110 Woodpecker Rd, Chesterfield, VA 23838.
