John, born May 22, 1940, Chicago, Illinois, a devoted husband, loving father and cherished grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
John was adventurous from horseback riding, skydiving when he was in his 70’s to zip lining and Via Ferrata. He also enjoyed gardening, fixing lawn mowers, riding his motorcycle and spending time with family. He loved our many camping adventures from tenting when the family was small to camping out with all the grandkids. He loved our road trips big and small and now he’s on his final road to meet our Lord Jesus.
John dedicated 33 years of his life as a Production Foreman at Illinois Tool Works, a position he really enjoyed. Moving on, after a little resting time, he joined the Home Depot team, and was there for over 20 years. His happy personality spoke for itself, he enjoyed forming many new friendships, he loved meeting new people. Most recently, he worked several years at Sylvia’s Amlings Flowers where he had special friendships and delivered flowers bringing joy to many.
As we reflect on the life of John, our hearts overflow with treasured memories. He had a remarkable ability to light up a room. His kindness, warmth, and wisdom touched the hearts of everyone who knew him. He was a provider, protector, and mentor to his family. His unwavering love, guidance and support were the foundation that shaped their lives.
He lived a full life filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments that will forever remain in our hearts.
John is survived by the love of his life and devoted wife of 64 years, Joan “Sugar”; his daughters Therese (Lynn Lary) Bauer, Denise (Jason) Olesen, Karen (Mark) Stephens; and grandchildren, Kevin, Matt, Stephanie, Alana, Jamie, Tommy, and Evan.
