John Beebe Obituary

John Wickersham Beebe

March 29, 1937 - February 6, 2025

QUEENSBURY - John Wickersham Beebe, 87, passed away on February 6, 2025 at Albany Medical Center.

Born on March 29, 1937, in Albany, NY, he was the son of the late Dr. Richard Taylor Beebe and Jean Wickersham Beebe.

John spent much of his 3rd grade year at Albany Medical Center, inflicted with Scarlett Fever. His recovery led to a life characterized by resilience, fortitude, and humility. He graduated from Taft School in 1956, where he was the captain of the hockey and baseball teams. John then went on to attend Hamilton College, where he captained, and played for the hockey team as their center forward.

"Just keep moving," he often stated, a sentiment demonstrated by his love of athletics, such as ice hockey, golf, tennis, squash, bicycling and more.

Following his college years, he served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1964.

In 2003, John retired from sales and inventory management at AT&T. However, he often spoke of his earlier adventures in the timber industry in both Oregon and the Adirondacks, as well as his time as a trucker, exploring the roads of North America.

He was a man with many accomplishments, including service to the Board of the Glens Falls Country Club, the board of the YMCA, a host to Glens Falls Symphony musicians, an advocate for the Glens Falls Civic Center's Adirondack Thunder hockey team, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, a long-time supporter of Crandall Library and most uniquely: a member of the International Brick Collector's Association.

John was perhaps best known for his gift of humor and storytelling, with many people that he met over the years becoming treasured and long-lasting friends.

In his later years, John was often seen walking the neighborhood or working in his garden, where to the delight of neighbors and passersby, he displayed his gift as a dahlia "farmer".

John was preceded by his wife, Mary-Arthur Beebe (Doolittle); his parents, Dr. Richard and Jean Beebe; his father and mother-in-law, John Q.A. and Mary-Arthur Doolittle; his brothers-in-law, Jay Doolittle, John Laundon, and Kenneth Reynolds.

Immediate survivors include his daughters, Jean Louise Beebe Cross (husband, Thomas B. Cross) of North Kingstown, RI and Marcie Beebe-Johnson (Douglas C. Hoechst ) of Asheville, NC; his grandchildren, Hannah J Cross; Elise R Cross; Tyler T Cross and Skyler W. Johnson; his sisters, Nancy Reynolds and Louise "Dossy" Laundon; his nephews, Ken Reynolds, John Laundon Jr., Thomas Laundon; his niece, Janet Reynolds-Magee; and his brother-in-law, Peter L. Doolittle.

There will be a small, family celebration of life in the summer of 2025.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in John's memory to the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 2036, Glens Falls, NY 12801; Hudson Headwaters Health Foundation, 9 Carey Rd, Queensbury NY, 12804; or to the Glens Falls Civic Center (Cool Insuring Arena), 1 Civic Center Plaza, Glens Falls NY, 12801.

Arrangements are under the direction of Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, Queensbury.

I enjoyed my visits with John. The conversation always ending with talking hockey. He never let me leave without gifting my son some of his unused Thunder tickets. Wonderful guy.

You should be very proud to have wonderful parents. I remember breaking the glass shelf in kitchen big window. I was so upset telling Mr. B that I did that. He wasn't upset he was more concerned that I was upset. Even your mom was concerned that I was upset. In the 33 years of knowing them I have never seen the bad side. He has always had a happy face a joke or a story to tell me.I am going to miss him.
