John Christopher Beery, 82, of Heathsville, Virginia, passed away May 30, 2025. He was born March 20, 1943, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the third child of four to Thomas Dean Beery, Sr and Elizabeth (Betty) Duddleson Beery.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his son John Christopher Beery, Jr., and brother Marshall Duddleson Beery. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Yvonne Beery; daughter Kathryn (Katie) Rachelle Beery of Heathsville, VA and son Michael Scott Beery and wife Kris, and grandchildren Jack and Peyton of Ashburn, VA. He is also survived by his brother Thomas Dean Beery, Jr. and wife Lanny of Pascagoula, MS, sister Anne B. McRee and husband Joe of Ocean Springs, MS; and his cousin Cathy Paben and husband Jim of Hannibal, MO.
John grew up in Old Greenwich, Connecticut and moved to Pascagoula, Mississippi as a teenager. John was a Naval Submariner in the Vietnam War and served on the USS Blueback. After the war he moved with his wife Yvonne from Oahu, HI to Melbourne, FL where he received an AS degree in Electrical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology (FIT). John and his family then moved to Lake of the Woods (LOW), VA where he was very active in the LOW Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and served as firefighter and Deputy Fire Chief and as a Cardiac Technician. John was an avid sailor his whole life and grew up sailing in Old Greenwich, CT and Pascagoula, MS. He was the founder and first President of the LOW Sailing Club, and he was also an Ancient Mariner with the Fishing Bay Yacht Club where he was an active member for over 25 years.
Early in his engineering career John was the vice president of two companies, Signa Signers and Signature Systems. He later took a job with the Federal Reserve in Culpeper, VA and then in Richmond, VA where he retired as a Senior Currency Systems Engineer. He loved sailing his Flying Scot sailboat and was a member of several associations including the Flying Scot Sailing Association (FSSA) and the Greater Richmond Sailing Association (GRSA). John and his wife Yvonne were also active members with the Honda Goldwing Chapter U and loved taking motorcycle trips around the country with their friends and Goldwing members. John moved to the Northern Neck of Virginia a year ago and was a resident of Chesapeake Harbour in Heathsville where he loved taking golf cart rides to the water with his dogs.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 6, 2025, at Currie Funeral Home in
Kilmarnock, VA officiated by Pastor Maria Ferrand and Pastor Steven Parker. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service with interment following at Roseland Cemetery in Reedville, VA.
