John Berg Obituary

Beloit, WI - John William Berg, 94, of Beloit, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Halifax Health Hospice Care of Orange City, Florida. John, fondly known as "Jack," was born on January 25, 1931, in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin to Bertrum and Frances (Kastenmeier) Berg. Jack grew up in Beloit, Wisconsin, graduated from Beloit Memorial High School and attended Marquette University before (in lieu of being drafted) enlisting in the army. In the Korean War, Jack served on the front lines. Upon returning home from the United States Army, he participated in the Beloit baseball league, and it was there that he met Marianne Floyd. Though his best friend, Frank Marsden, told him, "She is out of your league!" Jack married Marianne on January 14, 1961, at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church. Jack began his career in sales at Hanson Equipment in South Beloit, Illinois and later moved to managing local gas stations. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church. Beyond work, Jack was passionate about his community and helping people. He proudly gave his time volunteering with the fire department, participating in the Lion's Club and other local organizations. Quiet and soft spoken, he very rarely spoke about himself, but during the last few years, he shared memories about his childhood friends (often mentioning Dick Dawson and their antics), playing basketball in high school and college, special memories of mom, date night playing cards with relatives and friends, and reconnecting with his cousin (Senator Robert W. Kastenmeier). Jack's kindness, generosity, and love for his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. We love you, Dad. Jack was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Marianne Berg; son, Jeffrey Berg; sister, Phyllis Sholes; sister, Mary Ann Rollette; brother, Donald Berg; brother-in-law, Robert Rollette; sister-in-law, Grace Berg. Survivors include his daughters, Angela (Paul) Odom and Sherry (John) Irick; grandchildren, Jordan Odom and Luther Odom; several nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service for Jack will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 15, 2025, in Floral Lawn Cemetery. Visitation of Remembrance will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, in the Daley Murphy Wisch & Associates Funeral Home and Crematorium, 2355 Cranston Rd., Beloit, WI. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Jack's memory can be sent to the Stateline Community Foundation, 690 3rd Street, Suite 110, Beloit, WI 53511.
