John "Jack" Hamilton Berry Sr., 85 of Owensboro died Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born June 7, 1928 in Stanley to the late Clinton A. and Regina Hamilton Berry. Jack was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a restaurateur and spent his career in the BBQ business with Old Hickory and The Beanery. Jack was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, a lifetime member of the American Legion and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a very humble, honest, compassionate and unselfish person with a sharp wit who has been described as "a true country gentleman." Jack had a passion for cooking for family and friends, gardening, and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. He also was preceded in death by a brother, C.A. Berry and a sister, Mary Isla Frick.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Patricia "Patsy" Berry of Owensboro; children, Glenn P. Berry of Owensboro, John Hamilton Berry Jr. of Louisville, Charles McClelland Berry of Lexington, Alan C. Berry of Louisville and Joy Berry of Denver, NC; grandchildren, John "Kaz" Matuszewski, Chase McClelland Berry, Holden Christopher Berry, Stori Matuszewski, Nicholas Alan Berry, Leah Marie Berry and Hamilton Blue Fischer.
Services will be at noon Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Our Lady of Lourdes with Fr. Ed Bradley presiding. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Legion of Owensboro or Our lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
