John Bertoldi
IRON MOUNTAIN - John L. Bertoldi, 82, of 900 Woodward Ave., Iron Mountain, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.
He was born July 23, 1921, in Norway, son of the late Louis and Eva (Engibous) Bertoldi. John was a lifelong resident of this area and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1939. He attended Marquette University and graduated with a degree in business. John served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In July of1965, he married Marie Tabaka and she preceded him in death on Sept. 11, 1966.
John was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain, where he had served as an usher for many years. He was a longtime member of the Iron Mountain Lions Club and had held many positions through the years. John was a charter member of Wildlife Unlimited and served as treasurer for many years. He was very active in scouting, the Hiawathaland Council and the Menominee Range District.
He was also a former board member of the First National Bank of Iron Mountain , a former member of the Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA) board in Iron Mountain, and past president of the Dickinson County Chamber of Commerce.
He enjoyed spending time at camp with his dogs and he enjoyed fishing in his earlier years. John had quite a "green thumb" and was proud of the beautiful roses he grew each year. He was fondly known as "Grandpa John" to all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by one son, David Tabaka in 1991.
He is survived by three children, Mary Couper, John Paul Tabaka and Jane (Dennis) Santini, all of Iron Mountain; two brothers, George (Fran) Bertoldi and Bill (Joyce) Bertoldi, both of Kingsford; a sister, Mary Bertoldi of Iron Mountain; and five grandchildren, Scott (Melissa) Couper, Angela Santini, Kristina Santini, Becky Couper and Louis Santini.
Visitation will be held Monday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at 6 p.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
Pallbearers will be Gary Sparpana, Joe Spigarelli, Bruce Torretti, Jim Urbany, Pete Tomassoni, and Jerry Morelli. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Gingrass, John Dougoveto and John Englund.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church Restoration Fund.
