Death Notice

John Robert Bodoh

1944 - 2024

John Bodoh, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at age 79 on January 12, 2024 in Bristol, VA.
John was born March 28, 1944 as the first of four children to Al and Genevieve Bodoh in Evanston, IL. He grew up as an athlete, playing football and enjoying boating and water skiing at the family vacations to the lakes of Wisconsin. John studied engineering and was a proud member of the Sigma Pi fraternity at the University of Illinois before taking a job as a computer programmer at IBM in Chicago. In 1967, he fell in love with Joan Krupa. Six months later they started a loving marriage that lasted over 55 years, almost never leaving each other's side. After starting a family, John continued his career at IBM which transplanted them from Illinois to New York, where he explored his passion for do-it-yourself projects. He assembled a woodworking shop in his basement, becoming skilled at building furniture and crafts. Another move within New York gave him the chance to try general contracting, and custom-built the family house on 20 acres in Clinton Corners, NY. John enjoyed forging his own path in life, raising his own animals such as pigs, goats, turkeys, ducks, geese and horses. In 1993, another move with IBM landed them in Colorado where they built a beautiful home in Larkspur. They spent time outdoors enjoying day trips and picnics throughout the scenic Rocky Mountains. John also loved going to college football games with his family, supporting his daughter and son-in-law's alma mater, Colorado State University, as well as being a devoted supporter of the Air Force Academy football team as a season ticket holder. He loved planning and hosting the tailgate parties at these games. John's favorite way to relax became another hobby for him: watching and collecting movies. He was an avid movie enthusiast, accumulating an impressive collection of DVDs that he meticulously cataloged in a database and displayed proudly on custom-built shelves. After a distinguished 26 year career at IBM, John continued applying his computer programming skills as a contractor to a few other companies, including updating tax software for the IRS. He and Joan finally retired to Kingsport, TN in 2014, where he was able to focus on his woodworking hobby full-time. Anyone who received a custom-made pen from him knew he was skilled at craftsmanship. John was a lifelong fan of the Green Bay Packers football and never missed a Sunday broadcast backing his favorite team.
John is survived by his devoted wife, Joan; sister, Martha Milbourn (Jim); half-sister, Jody; son, David Bodoh (Carrie); daughter, Karen Bucci (Bob); and grandchildren, Sarah, Ryan, Mady, Jack and Katie; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. John is predeceased by his parents; his brother, James Bodoh; and his sister, Carol Perkins.
There will be a memorial service at Akard Funeral Home in Bristol, TN on Saturday, January 27th at 11am.
