John's journey began in Kentucky, where his early years were shaped by the values of hard work and education. He carried these values throughout his life, graduating from Berea College with a bachelor's degree before furthering his education at Indiana University, where he earned a master's degree. His commitment to lifelong learning was a cornerstone of his character.
John honorably served his country in the US Army, a testament to his patriotism and sense of duty. Following his military service, he embarked on a long and distinguished career with the National Park Service. His dedication and leadership were evident as he worked his way up from park ranger to Assistant Regional Director of the Mid-Atlantic Region. John's work took him to various historical sites across the country, where he left an indelible mark on the preservation of our nation's heritage. Some of those places included Pea Ridge, AR, Petersburg, VA, Washington DC, Hyde Park, NY, New York City, and Philadelphia.
While John's professional accomplishments were significant, it was his personal life that truly defined him. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Betty P. Bond, and is survived by a loving family that includes his daughter, Jonna Dersch (Douglas); son-in-law, Rich Becker; grandchildren, Kathryn Dersch, Megan Dersch, Jonathan Dersch, Jennifer Huster (Todd), Jason Becker (Nantikan), and Justin Becker (fiancé, Olivia); six great-grandchildren; his siblings, Carl Bond, Rose Brummett, Nonnetta Tinell, and Odella Martin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He also was the head of the Berean Class and organized many trips for 20 years. Later, he became a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Mount Laurel. His faith was a guiding light throughout his life.
John's passions extended beyond his work and church activities. He was a talented musician who taught himself to play the organ, violin, and guitar.
