John G. Vanden Boom, age 79, died peacefully at the Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe on August 17, 2016. John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn D.; their five children, Mark (Susan), Donna Melucci (John A.), Susan C. Williams (Jim), Julie White (the late Steve) and Mary Jane Haindl (Christof); eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his sister, Marge Venuk (John). John was born in Detroit on May 21, 1937 the son of Jacob and Cecelia Vanden Boom. He was a 1956 graduate of St. Joe's High School in Detroit where he played football during his high school years. After graduation, he joined the Detroit Fire Department where he worked as a firefighter his first five years before becoming an inspector in the fire prevention division for the next 23 years. He retired in 1986 after 28 years, having attained the rank of Captain as a Senior Fire Inspector. After retirement, he also worked at the St. John Hospital and Medical Center campus as their Fire Marshall. John was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for over 40 years. He also was a volunteer at the Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe and a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Friday evening. He will lie instate at St. Basil Catholic Church, 22851 Lexington Ave, Eastpointe from 11:30 a.m. Saturday until mass begins at 12 noon. Rev. Fr. Richard Bartoszek will officiate. The family has requested memorials to sent to either St. Vincent dePaul Society, St. Joan of Arc Conference, 22412 Overlake, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080 or The Capuchin Monastery, c/o The Province of St. Joseph of the Capuchin Order, Attn: Development Office, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street; Detroit, MI 48207.
