JOHN CALHOUN Obituary
John Vernell Calhoun, of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026, in his hometown of Dallas. Born on December 7, 1939, John was the son of Marcellus "Doc" Calhoun and Mary Gibbs Calhoun. He was raised in Dallas and graduated from Lincoln High School, where he built the foundation for a life defined by hard work, faith, and devotion to family.
John married Sharlette Calhoun on January 19, 2008, in Dallas, Texas. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather whose kindness and generosity touched everyone who knew him. He found great joy in attending church, fishing, and watching football, and he was especially passionate about spending time with his family. His children and grandchildren will always remember him as a steady, caring presence and a source of unconditional love and support.
A devoted man of faith, John was an active and dedicated member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Dr. Johnnie R. Bradley Sr., where he worshipped faithfully and served his church community with pride.
Professionally, John worked as a self-employed contractor for more than 40 years, earning a reputation for his strong work ethic and skill. He also spent over 30 years working at the State Fair of Texas, a role he truly enjoyed and one that brought him many friendships and fond memories.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcellus "Doc" Calhoun and Mary Calhoun; his first wife, Betty Veals; his second wife, Sharlette Calhoun; and his siblings Lenora Boston, Mary Calhoun, Curtis-Jean Calhoun, Portia Calhoun, and Jake Earl Calhoun.
He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Kimberly Cornelious (Veals); his granddaughter, Brittany Ware (Clay Ware); his sister, Anna-Kaye Calhoun-Odiase; his brother, Alvin Calhoun; along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other loving family members and friends.
The family extends special thanks to Johnetta Ellis, Mary Gaines, and Christina Escamilla for the exceptional care, compassion, and love they provided to John.
