John Carnes Obituary

John Lewis Carnes, Sr, 88, a resident of New Castle passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the Waters Edge Village in Muncie. He was born October 10, 1934 in Henry County to the late Lucian and Lillian (Groce) Carnes.

John was a service member in the United States Marine Corps where he was stationed in Pendleton, California. He retired from Alcoa Corp., HC Industries and the City of New Castle where he was Superintendent of the Street Dept. A member of the New Castle Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Golf Course, John attended Westview Church of the Nazarene. Along with playing golf, he enjoyed yard work, working on cars and taking care of his home. John was privileged to travel the world while working with HC Industries. Family was very important to John and he especially loved playing games with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include four children: Tamara (Randy) Carnes Dalida of Georgetown, IL, John Lewis (Sheila) Carnes, Jr., Terry James (Hope) Carnes and Debra Ada Carnes, all of New Castle; six grandchildren: Hannah Elaine and Izabella Dalida, Charlie Steury, Riley James Carnes (fiancé: Anna Hawkins, Joshua (Krista) Sanchez, Jessica Ann-Marie (Zach) Heishman and Shania (Trent) Hinsky; great-grandchildren: Rosaline, Malakai, Carson, Zylen, Nikara, Kalel, Michael, Elaina, Ahmiyah, Kemma and Ella; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years: Elaine (Massengale) Carnes, in-laws: Bud and Ruby Massengale and sixteen brothers and sisters.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 21, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery with military rites conducted by a contingent of the US Marine Corp, American Legion and the VFW. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday.
