John "Jay" Lydon Carty of Peabody passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday October 27th after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Boston to the late Arthur G. and Barbara A. (Lydon), he graduated from Belmont High School in 1963 and attended Tufts University, earning a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1967.
After getting married, Jay and Cissie settled in Marblehead, which they always considered home. In the 1980's, his career took the family to Pittsford, NY and Ridgefield, CT. When they moved back to Massachusetts they settled in Hingham before returning to Marblehead in the 1990's where they lived for 30 years until moving to Brooksby Village in Peabody.
Jay had a long and distinguished career as a sales executive at IBM, The Boston Company, and State Street Global Advisors. He was widely recognized as a mentor, coach, and advocate for his teams.
No matter what he was doing, Jay had a knack for putting people at ease with his quick wit and dazzling smile. He was always up for a good time and an adventure. He participated in the infamous Great Race from Watertown to Marblehead and often spoke about riding a bike through the Callahan Tunnel in the middle of the night. In the 1980s he became an avid runner and in 1981 completed the Niagara Falls International Marathon and continued to run in many road races over the years.
Jay and Cissie loved to travel; going frequently to Bermuda, St John, and Ireland which they considered to be "home". When travelling became difficult, they loved to visit their favorite Marblehead restaurants, Café Italia and upstairs at the legendary Maddie's.
He loved music and was an accomplished pianist and tenor singer with the ability to harmonize to any song on the radio.
John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lillian "Cissie" (Hodges) Carty; his two daughters Melissa Hoey and her husband William; Katherine Fogg and her husband Mark and their daughters Emma and Hannah; his brother Brian Carty and his wife Mary (McGrath); his sister Susan Rapoport and her husband James; his sister-in-law Mary (Hodges) Doherty. He was a very proud uncle to his beloved nieces, nephews, their spouses and children.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two brothers in law, Jim Doherty and Jack Hodges Jr.
