John Cenci Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Patrick T. Lanigan Funeral Home - Turtle Creek on Jan. 21, 2026.
Of Wilkins Twp., age 92, died peacefully on Monday, January 19, 2026.

John was the beloved husband of the late Carol (Murphy) Cenci for 54 years.

He was the loving and precious father of Susan (Ed) Bruener of Wilkins Twp., Maureen (Bob) Busche of Murrysville and Teri (Ken) Dornback of Mt. Lebanon.

John was the cherished grandfather of Daniel (Lauren) Bruener and Patrick Bruener; Shawn (Matthew) Fisch, Matthew (Gabrielle) Busche and Brooke Busche; Alex Dornback and Eve Dornback.

He was also blessed with 2 great-grandchildren: Murphy and Henry Bruener.

John was the brother of Richard (Madeline) Cenci, the late Joseph (surviving spouse, Audrey) Cenci and the late Antoinette Cenci.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

John's early life was marked by his exceptional athleticism and academic achievement. A proud 1952 graduate of Schenley High School, he earned a football scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. His time at Pitt was not only defined by his contributions as captain on the football team, but also by his commitment to serving his country through the Army's Reserve Officer Training Corps (R.O.T.C.). His dedication to both his education and his military training was a testament to his character and to the work ethic that he carried throughout his life.
After graduation, John's talents were recognized by none other than Art Rooney, who facilitated his signing as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers by helping to defer John's military obligation by one year. That year, 1956, saw him donning the black and gold as a center, a role he embraced with the same vigor and determination that were the hallmarks of his life. John's NFL career, though brief, was a period of great pride and a reflection of his lifelong love for the game of football.
Following his service to the Army, John embarked on what would become a distinguished career in education. He began shaping young minds through teaching and coaching at Sharpsburg High School before moving on in both roles to Turtle Creek High School. His passion for learning was evident as he furthered his own education, earning a Masters in Teaching at his beloved Pitt and a second Masters in Counseling from Duquesne University. It was as a Guidance Counselor at Plum School District that John found his true calling, guiding countless students with wisdom and compassion.
John's contributions to education and sports did not go unnoticed. In 2004, his achievements and influence were celebrated with his induction into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

John was a man of creativity and quiet hobbies as he was skillful in the art of oil painting and gardening.

His most favorite time though was any time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially enjoying the family summer beach vacations.

As per John's request, his visitation and Blessing Service will be private to his family.

He will be laid to rest with Military Honors at St. Joseph Cemetery.

As a neighborhood kid and friend to Mr. Cenci's kids while growing up, It was great to have him as a neighborhood dad. He was kind and friendly, I still smile when I remember him doing the voice of King Friday the 13th from Mr. Roger's neighborhood as we played at his family's house with his daughters who were my age. He left a lasting impression of kindness and being a good neighbor in the times where all the neighborhood kids would run and play together around the neighborhood. We were blessed to have Mr. Cenci as a neighborhood Dad.
