John Joseph Chicko, 94, of Newton Falls, Ohio passed peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2025 at his residence.
On September 10, 1930, Vicenzo Ciccozzi and Theresa Iamatteo Mather Ciccozzi welcomed the birth of their son who they named, Giovanni Giuseppe Ciccozzi.
During World War II with three of his brothers serving their country in 1944, John found a way to help his country at the age of 14 by obtaining a job during the summer working at Copperweld Steel. John's five brothers all served in the military, with his brother, Joseph, killed in action in St. Lo, France on July 4, 1944. John was inducted on April 27, 1951 into the United States Army. He served until his honorable discharge on April 13, 1953.
John married Betty Blair in 1951 and they had three children, John, Vickie and Gary. Later, he married Mary Johnson in 1981. She preceded him in death in 2008.
He was always mechanically inclined. As a young boy at the age of 12, he made repairs to his older friend's vehicles at his parent's home. As an adult, John was a heavy equipment operator/mechanic for J & L Trucking and Construction and had also been employed by Fithian Construction and Anchor Motor Freight.
John was a member of the Newton Falls VFW Post 3332 and Amvets Post 112.
John is survived by his children, John (Diana) Chicko, Vickie (Dennie) Chicko-Ball and Gary (Song Hee) Chicko; his grandchildren, Joshua, Tamie, Daniel (Quynh) and April; his great grandchildren, Mila, Zynnia, Tony, Madison and Christopher, Jr.; and his great, great grandchild, Zoei Watson.
Preceding John were his parents; his sisters, Elizabeth M. Marchigiano, Angelina Nemeth, Natalie Setting, Mary Sebben and Margaret Krivjansky; his brothers, Louis, Frank, Joseph, Anthony, James, Sylvester and Richard Chicko; and his grandchildren, John Chicko, Jr., Jason Chicko, Justin Chicko and Christopher Baryak, Sr.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the Borowski Memorial Home in Newton Falls, Ohio where military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and the Newton Falls Veterans Honor Guard. Following the military honors, a service will be held at 12:00 p.m. with the Rev. David Merzweiler officiating. A luncheon with fellowship will be provided by the Ladies Guild at the St. Joseph and St. Mary Social Hall, 131 W. Quarry Street, Newton Falls, Ohio.
John will be taken to his place of rest in St. Joseph Cemetery.
