John William Chromy Jr. passed away peacefully Sunday, October 17, 2021, in Wilmington, Delaware with family at his side. John was born June 17, 1930, in NY City, NY to the late John William Chromy and Louise M. Chromy.
He graduated from Cooper Union College in New York City as a Civil Engineer through a scholarship and began his 39-year career with the DuPont Company in 1952. The same year, on May 25, John married Rosemarie Susan Le Pore (deceased), also of New York City. In June they relocated to Seaford, Delaware to start work with DuPont during the early days of nylon. Through the years John had serval other assignments providing supervisory positions in Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering at Chestnut Run Plaza, Christina Lab, and Newport Industrial Lab. He was a Registered, Professional Engineer in the State of Delaware, and a past President of the Delaware Society or Professional Engineers. John retired January 31, 1991.
John was a member of Limestone Presbyterian Church for many years and was a Scoutmaster for Troup 600 at the church. He was involved in Scouting long before he was member of the church. In 1956 he took his group to the Philmont Ranch in New Mexico. He fell in love with the west.
He enjoyed his time spent at the Delaware Saengerbund, a club celebrating German American Heritage. He loved the food and singing German songs at the club and was also a past President.
John was an active Amateur Radio Operator, K3CNI since 1957 and communicated with people around the world. He was extremely proud of his involvement and his accomplishments throughout the years. He was a past President of Delaware Amateur Radio Club, and a member of Air Force MARS.
He also shared a love of the outdoors. His favorite activities included hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. John also enjoyed wood working when time allowed.
Retirement came for John on January 31, 1991, which he 'thoroughly enjoyed' for 30 years. During that time, he and longtime companion and friend, Millie Brown made countless cross-country trips with their Airstream trailer including several trips as far as Alaska. Millie and John were members of the Delmarva Unit – Airstream Travel Club. They attended many National Rallies around the county. John was a past President of the club.
John is survived by his children, Susan Anderson of Wilmington, John William Chromy lll (Nancy) of Redstone Colorado; grandchildren, Erica Darkes (Kevin) of Wilmington, Shawn Anderson (Melissa) of Newark, Ryan Wolfe, Jack Wolfe (Molly) and great grandson, Leon Bishop Wolfe of Redstone.
A viewing will be held at Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Road, Wilmington on Monday, November 1 from 10:00-11:00AM, with funeral services beginning at 11:00AM. Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington.
