John Harold Coffman passed away peacefully on the evening of May 28, 2025, at the age of 90.
"A quiet man but quite a man", John was known for his steady kindness, unwavering work ethic, and warm, ever-present smile. Born on February 5, 1935, John was the fourth of nine children born to Harold Ray and Pauline (Simson) Coffman. He was raised with strong values of family and hard work, which guided him throughout his life. On October 29, 1954, John married his childhood sweetheart, Lorna Curtis. They shared 41 years of marriage before her passing in 1996. Together, they built a loving home, raised a large family, and made countless memories, including days at the horse races-one of their favorite pastimes.
John was a proud farmer and a hardworking man who spent over 43 years as a forklift driver at General Motors. After a full day at the shop, he would come home and work the land-a true example of dedication and grit. He took great pride in teaching his children the value of honest work. In his free time, John enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: deer and pheasant hunting, fishing, playing cards, splitting wood, and tending to his garden. He loved harvesting hickory nuts and walnuts, playing softball and horseshoes, and was always up for a family gathering. Homemade baked goods were a special favorite, and nothing brought a smile to his face quite like being around children or spending time with his beloved cats and dogs. John was good-natured and generous-he would do anything for anyone. His legacy of kindness and hard work lives on in the family he cherished so deeply.
He is survived by his children: Brent (Janet), Dale, Glenn (Janeen), Neil (Wendy), Keith, and Johnny; grandchildren: Brian (Erin), Elizabeth (Bob) McKee, David (Sarah), Rachel (LeRoy) Austin, Justin (Lori), Camie (Paul) Riese, Tamie (Scott) Griffis, Jason, Shannon (Andy) May, Josh, Desiree, Dylan, Brianna, Tara Vallejo, TJ Welton, Kevin (Elizabeth), Katelyn, and Mindy (Jason) Marshall; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Schultz and sister-in-law, Beverly (Mel) Crowell. John was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna; his son, Mark; seven siblings-Loretta, Georgiana, Bob, Doris, Hanna, Larry, and Jane; and in-laws, Robert Curtis, Larry Curtis and Rosemary (Neil) Stevens.
A graveside service will be held at South Ovid Cemetery, 6194 S. Parks Road, St. Johns on Thursday, June 5th at 1 PM. Pastor Phil Beavers officiating. A Celebration of Life and scattering of ashes on the farm will be held at a later date.
