John Colvin Obituary

John J. Colvin, III of Burtonsville, Maryland passed away on January 30, 2026, after a long illness. He was born on December 25, 1944, in Portland, Maine.

He graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1972 and the University of Maine, Orono in 1974. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968, including 3 years in HMX-1 (White House Helicopter Squadron) in the Presidential Support Units in Quantico, Virginia and Washington, DC. During this time he served as Marine One escort for President Lyndon Johnson.

John was employed for nearly fifty years as a retail professional in a variety of management, operations, merchandising and real estate positions in Florida, Kansas, Michigan, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Maine and Connecticut. He retired as Director of Leasing from Ratner companies of Vienna, Virginia in 2013.

John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Suzanne; daughter Crista Colvin, Esq., and granddaughter Alexandra, both of Silver Spring, Maryland.

For 48 years John and Suzanne enjoyed many annual treks to Maine, spending time at the family lake cottage on Lake Cobbosseecontee in Winthrop, Maine.

John was also an avid sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.

He enjoyed supporting the University of Maryland Terrapins when they won the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship in 2002.

John and I worked together at two different companies. John was perhaps the hardest working person I ever encountered. He did the work of well more than one person. Nearly all he did was focused, precise and with a goal in mind.

While he had little patience with things he saw as a distraction or wasteful, he was ever kind, humble, understanding and thoughtful. He adhered to his values and was a good teacher. He took both setbacks and wins with a reserved smile and gained wisdom, of which, in my opinion, he had a great amount.

To me, and others, he was unique, a wonderful colleague and friend. It was my privilege to know and to work with John.
