So sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Cooke. I remember talks my grandmother and I regarding your father as they both were school mates at Lee Jackson and both shared a love of history. Mr. Cooke was such a honorable man who loved his county and his country. He will be missed greatly. My condolences to the rest of the Cooke family. Keeping all of you in my prayers.

Dear Elsa, My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this sad time in your life. I also lost my father (Graham Brooks)a few years back, and I know the pain of such a loss. Your father was a very dedicated, honorable, and kind man. I remember when I used to come over to your home and we'd play between your home and Irvinville (where my Aunt Nora Taylor) lived back in the late 1950's, early 60's. I also remember you from our school years as a very kind person. May the good Lord bless and comfort you and your family today and always!!

Miss Becky, Elsa and Giles: The loss of your dad brings back memories of dad and how great they were as friends. We have so many wonderful memories of family get togethers - he was a special man and will be missed. He always had a big smile for everyone and never forgot to ask about the family!

I sincerely loved your Dad. I enjoyed so much sitting in his office at the Gazette Journal and talking about old times in the General Assembly of Virginia. He was my hero. He was Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Patrick Henry all rolled into one. He was,indeed, a true Gentleman. All of Virginia respected him. He should have been and would have been the Greatest Governor that this State ever had.

Elsa, My deepest sympathies to you and your family. What an honorable man. What a legacy. I pray the Lord will help you find peace at this sad time and that you will find comfort in the wonderful memories embedded in your hearts.

Mr. Cooke has accomplished much in his life as a politician, an editor, a father, and a husband. I was blessed to grow up next door to him. I will always remember his kindness to me. All who know him personally speak so highly of him. His influence is felt practically everywhere in the town of Mathews. Whether it's history, the local newspaper, the local library, or the local yacht club. His influence is there. I know I'm leaving off much here in his influences. I seriously doubt whether there will ever be again another person in this nation rise to such a high politcal position from such a small and humble town as Mr. Cooke did. All this coupled with the fact that Mr. Cooke may very well be this nations last offspring of a Civil War veteran, makes Mr. Cooke a fascinating link to our nations past. I take comfort in knowing him and knowing that he has lived such a full and successful life. I wish his immediate family and all the others who knew him closely the very sincerest of my condolences.

Mr. Cooke was always an interesting, lovely person to be around; he will be missed. We will be thinking of you as you celebrate his life this week. My prayers are with you all. Love, Mary Towles

Our deepest sympathy to the Cooke family. I have always had so much respect for Mr. Cooke. We will always remember his attending my dads 85th birthday party and bringing him a bottle of champagne. My dad appreciated him taking time to come. We will remember him with fond memories of that great smile and always taking the time to say hello when he saw me.
