John E. Corbett, Sr., 78, passed away June 14, 2024. He was born September 4, 1945 to Marshall and Bertha Corbett in Indianapolis, Indiana.
John was an amazing man who made many friends wherever he went. John enjoyed his family. John was many things to many people. If you met him, you never forgot him. He loved seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He loved golfing. His latest enjoyment was hanging out at the casino playing Keno! One of his last hurrahs was Sunday, June 9 with a visit to the Horseshoe Casino where he taught his daughter-in-law and granddaughter how to play Keno. All of his children were with him on that memorable day. And to top it off, (after the kids all left) he hit a jackpot.
John grew up in Drexel Gardens and belonged to Salk Park Boys Club. He enjoyed playing team softball and basketball. His nickname was Goose after the famous Harlem Globetrotter, Reece “Goose” Tatum. He enjoyed fishing, playing and watching outdoor sports. John was proud of the activities his children and grandchildren participated in.
John was a hell of a worker and had an excellent work ethic. He worked at the local grocery store, Gilliam’s, as a young teenager. John began his painting apprenticeship at the age of 18 and enjoyed his vocation for over 40 years. He was very active in the Painter’s Local 47 where he served as vice-president and other leadership positions. John was a loyal union brother for over 60 years. He retired from the union but continued painting until his health prevented him from providing the quality of workmanship for which he was known.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Marshall & Bertha, brothers, James, Henry, Perry, and Kenny and sister, Leola. John is survived by his wife, Kathy, of 58 years, children, John (Tamara), Casey (Trina), Kristy Damon (Eric), Julie Horvath (David), his sister, Marsha Stewart, and brother, David (Tammie), grandchildren, Katelyn Rodriguez (Pancho), Josh (Rachel), Ethan Hargis, Jacob (Carlos), Trey, Jacey (Nick) Baker, Evan Horvath, and Joy. There are 7 great-grandkids with 2 more on the way.
