John Ross Douglas

John Ross Douglas, 90, of Warwick, RI, passed away on October 13, 2022 at Hope Health Hospice after a fall in July.

He leaves his children, Nancy Douglas Putnam (husband Mark), Bill Douglas (wife Marva), and Scott Douglas (wife Maritza), and three grandchildren, Gregory Putnam, Nicholas Putnam, and Joshua Douglas and also a stepson, John Kalliongis and his children Jamie, John, and Jesse.

John was born in Yonkers, NY to the late Walter and Daisy (Stuckless) Douglas with three now deceased siblings, sister Marion Lindstrom, brother Robert Douglas, and sister Dorothy Douglas. He was the husband of the late Nancy (Page) Douglas, the mother of his children, and the late Esther (Kalliongis) Douglas.

John was a proud graduate of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, class of 1954. He was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and maintained those friendships throughout his life.

Before moving to Rhode Island he lived in Weymouth, MA then Easton, Allentown and Bethlehem PA with a career in mechanical engineer & sales.

He had many interests, foremost of which was spending time with his friends and family and lending a helping hand whenever he could. He was very patriotic. He loved the outdoors. As a youth, he worked on a farm during the summers. In the 60s & 70s he had an organic garden with the biggest veggies around. He was a Boy Scout Scoutmaster and District Commissioner, spending many weekends in his yellow canoe on the Delaware River. Up until his passing he still enjoyed the fresh air.

John enjoyed music. In his younger years he played the violin. Classical and Marching Band music were his favorites - no Rock n Roll for John, except for listening to a guitar sing-along around a campfire. In the 70s he got a weekend job in a bakery to earn extra money. He loved baking bread and continued doing so until he and Esther sold their home in Bethlehem PA in 2016. Every year he helped Esther bake Greek bread and cookies for the Greek Church, where, for 20 years he also served as treasurer.

A Memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 4:00PM at THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Warwick RI. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 3:00PM-4:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 1607 W Union Blvd, Bethlehem, PA 18018, are greatly appreciated.
