John Dow Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 6, 2025.
John Dow lived with an undeniable zest for life, known to all for his quick wit, magnetic charm and timeless good looks. His passions were as vibrant as his personality – he found joy in art, music, cooking and savoring good food, and he never missed a chance to cheer on his beloved Redskins. Born to Helen and Joseph Dow of Bureau, Illinois, John was the eldest of three sons. His journey of service began with the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at what was then known as Andrews Air Force Base. Maryland became home, and after an honorable discharge, he embarked on a successful career with State Farm Insurance spanning over 20 years. In the early 1980's, John discovered a new passion when he stepped onto the stage in a local production of Oklahoma at PGLT. That spark ignited a love for the performing arts that would shape the rest of his life. Whether portraying colorful characters, lending his voice to commercial work or appearing in print, John brought an authenticity to every role. More than the spotlight, he cherished the friendships and community that the theater gifted him. John adored his grandchildren and took immense pride in their lives, often whisking them away on train adventures to Illinois or weekend escapes to Colonial Williamsburg. His legacy lives on in the laughter and memories shared on those journeys. John was preceded in death by his loving parents, brother David, and the love of his life, Aletha Jaeger. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Kimberly Carter (Chuck); grandchildren Emily (Tyler) and Christopher; brother Daniel Dow (Rhonda); nephew Dana Dow (Amy); niece Dawn Dove (Jeff); and a wide circle of extended family and cherished friends. A private interment will be held with a Celebration of Life to follow at a later date. John's spirit, humor, and love will continue to echo in the lives of all who knew him.
