John Eckert Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ellinger-Kunz Funeral Home & Springfield Crematory on Feb. 18, 2026.
John M Eckert, 66, of Springfield, IL passed away on February 15, 2026. Born March 21, 1959, to his parents Albert and Nancy Eckert, who proceeded him in death. John loved his Grandma Grace; he was always her favorite.

John was an unwavering public servant until his very last days. He worked for the Department on Aging for over 20 years, finishing his career as the Deputy Division Manager and was set to retire on February 28. His work for the State of Illinois transformed many lives and strengthened the services that support our aging community and persons with disabilities. Through his dedication, he helped expand critical resources, access to care and influenced as well as implemented laws to improve the lives of countless people while also being a devoted son, brother and uncle.

His smile lit up every room he entered. His work changed lives for the better and his compassion and love gave people hope. John embodied perseverance and a deep commitment to finding purpose beyond his life's disadvantages. He showed that meaning is not defined by circumstance, but how you choose to live, connect and serve. To those who knew him, he was an inspiration and an example of how to live fully and love generously.

John leaves behind his siblings, Jim (Sharon), Grace, Carol, Susan Eckert Dessa (Jeff) and Martha, his nephew and nieces, James, Grace, Pepper and Kate and great nieces, Reina, Marina and Iona.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. A visitation to honor and remember his life will be held at Ellinger-Kunz Funeral Home (530 N 5th Street, Springfield IL 62702) on Wednesday, February 25 from 3-7PM. In lieu of flowers, John has requested memorials be made to The Springfield Center for Independent Living (SCIL) or the Animal Protective League (APL of Springfield).

I´ve known John half of my life. He was my first next-door neighbor when I turned 18 I was just starting out in life and he was just finishing graduate school then we reconnected when he had a job up here and I ended up working up here as well we spent many evenings together having pizza drinking beer together going out. John also enjoyed my children. He took them to the zoo had cookouts, but when Covid hit, we sort of lost track each other even though we lived 10 minutes apart. I just talked to him a couple weeks ago. We were just getting ready to have a get together and then this news I am totally devastated. John was one of the smartest, funniest individual I knew he cared about people with disabilities and he served his state with honor the world lost a good person and always be a hole in my heart cause he was just more than a friend. He was my mentor.
