Father John Matthew Elanjileth

John Elanjileth Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Feb. 4, 2026.
Father John Matthew Elanjileth, age 104, of McKeesport, died February 2, 2026, at UPMC McKeesport Hospital. Born April 26, 1921, in Kerala, India, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Elanjileth.

Father Matthew was raised in a loving family and deeply influenced by the faith of his Mother. He entered the seminary and was ordained into the Catholic priesthood on August 24, 1945, in Kandy, Sri Lanka. From 1945 until 1963, Father Matthew was the rector of the Minor Seminary, training young men for the priesthood. During those years he served as Professor of Aramaic and Sociology at Mar Ivanios College in India.

In 1963, Father Matthew came to the University of Pittsburgh to further his studies in Sociology. Father has served several parishes in the Pittsburgh Diocese over the years including St. Mary of Mercy, St. Lawrence O'Toole in Garfield, Madonna del Costello in Swissvale, St. Joseph Coraopolis, and St. Sylvester in Brentwood. His credentials also include a Diploma in Social Leadership from the International Cody Institute in Canada and a Master's Degree in Education from Duquesne University.

Father Matt's assignment to St. Mary Romanian Catholic Church in Christy Park in 1981 brought him to McKeesport. Shortly after that, he extended his ministry to Auberele, serving at risk children and families and began his work as Chaplain at UPMC McKeesport Hospital.

Retired from his work as pastor, Father Matt resided in the former Kelly Building on the UPMC McKeesport campus, where he continued to minister to both Auberele and the UPMC McKeesport Hospital community.

For nearly over forty years, Father Matthew has walked the corridors of the hospital, tending not only to patients, but, to the staff, all employees and their families, far too many to number. The hour was never too late. The journey was never too far. It mattered not what religion your practice or what you may believe. Father Matt carried a message of hope and a prayer of comfort to those in need and to all who cared for them.

Mother Theresa was a life long friend. There is no doubt that she would be well pleased with Father Matthew's gift of himself to the UPMC McKeesport community and to all whom he has served in the McKeesport area throughout his life.

He is survived by his nephews, John (Susan) Punnoose of India, and Jacob (Reebu) Punnoose of India; niece, Elizabeth (Thomas) Thomas of India; many grand- nieces and nephews throughout the world; and extended family and friends.

Arrangements were entrusted to Willig Funeral Home & Crematory.

Committal prayers and burial took place in New St. Joseph's Cemetery in North Versailles. Family and friends are asked to gather on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at St. Angela Merici Church, 1640 Fawcett Ave., White Oak, PA 15131, for a memorial mass at 10 a.m. in honor of Father Elanjileth's loving spirit. Where to start... Fr. Mathew has been a part of our family from the first year he came to America. My Aunt and Mother welcomed him as family. I am 63 years old now and can remember sitting on his lap at the age of around 3. There are 8 of girls in our family each with memories of Fr. Mathew at Sunday family dinners and an often just pop in visits throughout our life. As an adult we often talked about God being in us all , having items blessed and birthdays celebrated. I cam speak for each of us when i say we looked forward to his many visits with us. BFr. Mathew loved us as he loved God and was there for us from as long as i can remember. He was loved and i know is elated to be with God as i am sure God is well pleased with him.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Father Elanjileth's death. When he was at St. Mary of Mercy Church in downtown Pittsburgh, he counselled a friend of mine, who was conflicted about becoming a nun. The date of this encounter was 22 November, 1963 at around 1:00 PM. President Kennedy was assassinated at the time they were to meet. My friend took this as an omen that she should not enter the convent, but she remained forever grateful to Father Elanjileth for his wise counsel. I also spoke with him a number of times, and was touched by his kindness, sweet disposition, and humanity. I send my condolences to the family and community of this memorable, wonderful man.

Dear Fr "2 T's, Now that you have finally found your Happy Place, who can we feed our chicken soup, pistachios, and 100% chocolate bars. You came into our family since 1998, when Fr Kedzierski brought you to our home blessing. We will never forget your home masses, your wry sense of humor, and being present at your 106 and 107 birthday masses. Have fun with Mother Teresa. We love you still. We'll see you some time whenever. Jackie and Chuck Galley

Father Matthew helped our family when we needed it most. My mother attended St Mary's for many years. He always accommodated my mother when she was waiting for an access ride. He was always so very kind. May he rest in peace.

Thank you Father Matt for being a blessing in the short time I knew you adhd had you as our family priest at St. Mary's in Christy Park. I have never forgotten you and I even told my 3 children about you for many years now. You helped me understand what the Bible said is possible when man said it wasn't, and I passed it off to my children. I won't forget getting to visit and spend time with you when we lived in PA. May you have peaceful and eternal rest in Heaven. God Bless you. Love, Heather, Gracie, Nick, and Jake

I remember Father Matt from St. Lawrence O´Toole Parish in Garfield. He was a great priest with a fun-loving spirit. Our parish put on a play, and I remember Father Matt´s memorable performance when he walked across the stage with a potted plant on his head! I can still see him as though it were yesterday instead of probably 50 years ago! May he rest in peace, and may Heaven be his happy Home.

Father Matthew was a wonderful priest who married my wife Constance and me at Madonna del Costello church in 1973. He subsequently became a family friend who later baptized many of the children in our families and also came to our family home numerous times to give blessings. We will forever cherish knowing him for his kindness.
