John R. Elfers, a beloved and esteemed husband, father, and attorney passed away peacefully on February 18, 2024 surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was 92.
Mr. Elfers was born to Charles and Kathryn Elfers on December 20, 1931 in Covington, KY. He served in the United States Army from 1948-1951 and was a graduate of Xavier University (1955) and Chase College of Law (1959). John practiced law for 55 years, truly dedicating his life to his passion of service, in both public and private practice. He served as the City of Covington Attorney and Prosecutor from 1961-1965. He then served as Kenton County Attorney for 28 years. During this tenure, he established the Domestic Relations Office and was a leader and member of numerous organizations including The Kentucky and Kenton County Attorneys Associations, the Northern Kentucky Regional Crime Council, Kenton County Democratic Club, Sunday Morning Club, Kenton County Boys and Girls Club, and the National Children Support Enforcement Association.
John is survived by his spouse, Carol Fee Elfers and his six children Cheryl Swayne (Keith), John Elfers Jr., Lisa Tekulve (Tom), Maria Baeten (Todd), Sarah Ellano (Barry), and Dawn Wagers; three siblings, Margie Jasper, Bettie Busher, and Judi Bauer; and 18 grandchildren. John was preceded in death by the mother of his children Shirley Elfers, his daughters Terry Hinzman and Angela Elfers and his grandson John Robert Elfers III.
His memory will be honored by innumerable friends, colleagues, and clients — all those whose lives he positively impacted.
John’s family will host a public visitation at Middendorf Funeral Home on Thursday, February 22, 2024 (3312 Madison Pike Ft Wright KY) from 4:00 PM until the Funeral Service begins at 7:00 PM. A private burial at Williamstown Veterans Cemetery is scheduled for Friday, February 23, 2024. In lieu of flowers, John’s children request donations to the Alzheimer’s Association.
