John Paul Etzel, beloved husband, father, son, brother, colleague, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on August 8, 2025, at the age of 44. He will be remembered for his calm and kind nature, his quiet strength, and the steady comfort he brought to everyone around him.
John was born on May 22, 1981, in Salem, Oregon, to Mark and Tracey (Clarke) Etzel. He graduated from South Salem High School in 1999 and went on to earn his bachelor's degree from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Following college, he spent several years living and working in Chicago, Illinois, before making his home in Texas.
Curious and adventurous, John loved traveling to new places, seeking out unique experiences, and always hunting for the next great restaurant. A true sports fan, he found joy in cheering on his favorite teams-especially the Oregon Ducks-and enjoyed hockey, college football, and golf.
Music was another great joy in his life. He loved discovering and sharing new artists, curating playlists, and often had one playing on repeat. Whether singing along off-key or belting out a favorite chorus, his enthusiasm and humor brought laughter to everyone around him.
John also enjoyed cooking, reading, tackling crossword puzzles, and watching Jeopardy! or the Food Network-but above all, he cherished time spent with his family. His proudest role was that of father to his daughter, Emilia. He supported her in every endeavor-from dance, gymnastics, and cheerleading to the unforgettable season he spent coaching her 4-year-old soccer team, chasing little ones around the field with patience and good humor. His love, guidance, and encouragement shaped Emilia's life in countless ways, and he delighted in every opportunity to be with her and the family he adored.
Professionally, John spent most of his career at Hilton Worldwide Sales, where he most recently served as a Senior Manager leading a talented team of sales professionals. As a leader, he inspired others with his integrity, dedication, and collaborative spirit.
John resided in
Celina, Texas, and is survived by his wife, Stephanie Etzel; daughter, Emilia Etzel; parents, Mark and Tracey Etzel of Reno, Nevada; sister, Anne Leavens (husband Mike) of Medford, Oregon; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Hillary and Irene Etzel and Edward and Beverly Clarke.
His absence leaves an ache in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues, but his legacy lives on in the love he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the memories he created as a devoted father, loving husband, and loyal friend.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Salem where John spent much of his childhood playing youth sports.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
