January 1, 1933 - September 8, 2025
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of John Wilfred Flood, a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, educator, and community servant, who passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born on January 1, 1933, in Augusta, Maine, to Alice V. Flood, DDS, and Everett David Flood, John's early life was shaped by the love and resilience of his parents. His mother, Dr. Alice Flood, while in labor with John, was reportedly transported to the hospital on a toboggan, slowed by two men at the rear and pulled by one at the front-an image that became part of the family lore and reflected her pioneering spirit. John often spoke fondly of his close-knit family and the deep values they instilled in him.
After graduating from high school, John joined the United States Navy, proudly serving during the Korean Conflict. His service was a defining chapter in his life, and he always spoke with honor about his time in the Navy.
Upon returning home from his military service, John married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Jean Goodwin, on December 8, 1956, in a ceremony at Penney Memorial Baptist Church in Augusta, Maine. Their partnership was one of deep love and devotion, lasting over 65 years until Marjorie's passing in November 2021.
John's academic journey took him to Michigan State University, where he began a pre-veterinary program before ultimately changing paths to become an educator. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Maine and later went on to receive a master's degree in education from the University of Connecticut.
A lifelong educator, John dedicated his career to teaching and shaping young minds. He began teaching in Cheshire, Connecticut, before becoming the principal of Johnson High School in Johnson, Vermont. Later, John took the position of Principal of the Newport, Vermont High School and then the Junior High School in Derby, Vermont, where he continued to make a lasting impact in the North Country Union High School system.
John and Marge raised four sons: Scott Flood of Hopkinton, NH; Tim Flood of Fuquay-Varina, NC; Don Flood of Hooksett, NH; and Randy Flood of Castine, ME. John was deeply proud of his sons. He and Marjorie always worked together to provide a loving home for their family.
After retiring from education in 1989, John and Marjorie moved to
Friendship, ME, where they co-managed the Flood's Cove Family Cottage Rental Business for the next 36 years along with his sister, Mary Thompson. In Friendship, John became an active member of the community, serving in numerous roles. He was a tax assessor for many years, the town animal control officer, and he volunteered as a driver for the local ambulance service. John loved his community and was always there to lend a helping hand. John and his wife were members of the United Methodist Church in Friendship for many years.
John's deep affection for his family home at Flood's Cove, where he spent summers for his entire life and lived full time for almost 40 years until his passing, was matched only by his love for his community and his dedication to service. Surrounded by his four sons and one grandson, he peacefully passed away from natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and kindness.
John was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie, in 2021, and his two brothers, Richard and David Flood. He is survived by his four sons including Scott (Ann), Tim (Julee), Don (Jennifer), Randy (Deletra); eleven grandchildren, Matthew, Benjamin, Joshua, Luke, Alexandra, Victoria, Caroline, Andrew, Nicholas, Zachary and Hannah; three step grandchildren, Wayne David Robbins Jr, Corinthia Robbins and Madeline Robbins; and six great-grandchildren, as well as his sister Mary Thompson and an extended family of nieces and nephews. John was a devoted family man who will be deeply missed by all who knew him-the world was certainly a better place with him in it.
A celebration of John's life will be held at the United Methodist Church in Friendship on November 15th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a
charity of your choice in his honor.
As we are surrounded by the love and memories of those who knew John, the family would like to thank dear caregivers-particularly dearest friend Donna, Lisa, Rachel, and Yvonne-whose caring for and service to John were instrumental in our being able to keep John in his beloved home, where his continued wish was met-to be able to "See Cow Island from his window." We trust he is in the arms of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and that he is enjoying a Heavenly reunion with Marjorie and other dear ones who passed before him.
