John R. Groat

John Richard Groat, a man whose hands were as skilled as his heart was kind, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on June 10, 1948, John spent his life building a legacy of service, craftsmanship, and quiet, steady love.

A proud member of the United States Army 11ACR, and a veteran of the Vietnam War, John's sense of duty was a defining part of his character. He carried that spirit of service into his community as a proud and active member of the Mohican Veterans, the American Legion, and the VFW. Nothing brought a brighter smile to his face or more joy to his heart than attending their meetings and events; the bond he shared with his fellow veterans was one of the great honors of his life.

John was a man who appreciated the value of things made to last. As a master gunsmith, he was known for his incredible patience and respect for the trade. His living room was a favorite gathering spot where a friend could always be found, sitting and talking shop while discussing guns and history. Family and friends often got a chuckle out of how his hands might have had a bit of a shake to them, but as soon as he got to work, he always managed to get the job done with the same precision as always. He also enjoyed coin collecting, finding interest in the history and detail behind each piece.

But more than his talents or his interests, John will be remembered for the "wonderful heart" he shared so freely. He was a man of gentle strength and immense generosity; the kind of person who was always there to lend a hand or a kind word. To know John was to know a friend who truly cared.

John has gone home to be with his wife, Joyce Groat; his parents, Willard and Irene; and his sisters, Janice and Patricia.

His memory lives on in the family he loved so dearly: his son, Steven Groat and daughter-in-law Kelly; and his cherished grandchildren, Lakelann, Jadyn (David), and Xavier (Gabriela). He is also survived by his niece, Tricia Homer Russel and his nephew, Todd Homer, along with his great-nieces. He also leaves behind friends who will forever carry his warmth in their hearts.

John's life was a master class in compassion and dedication. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends but the stories he told and the love he showed will never be forgotten.

Per family wishes, a graveside ceremony will be held in the spring.
