John Hagelin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Winthrop on Feb. 14, 2025.
John D. Hagelin, 79, of Kent's Hill, passed away on Feb. 10, 2025, at MaineGeneral's Comfort Care at Glenridge in Augusta.
John was born on September 2nd, 1945 in Walkersville, Maryland, the son of Clarence and Mabel Hagelin. John's early years were spent working on the farm with his parents, where he acquired his work ethic.
After graduating high school, he joined the Maryland Army National Guard, which was a particular point of pride for John, and deployed to Baltimore during the Baltimore Race Riots in 1968. After serving for six years, John began a successful lifetime career in the printing business.
John was living in New Hampshire when he saw an ad in a newspaper for a house in Readfield, Maine; he put in an offer and was surprised months later when he learned he had indeed bought the house. The house at the end of Stanley Road was his first experience with building and remodeling homes. This began his life-long passion of home construction and carpentry. John was a proud builder having built or remodeled each of his three family homes in Readfield, Mt. Vernon, and Kent's Hill; as well as his camp in Rangeley. John also created custom made wood pieces, including tables and furniture, for individuals and businesses throughout Maine.
John, upon moving to Maine, continued working in the printing and paper industry, working throughout New England; eventually creating his own printing business, Matrix Printing. He also proudly served on the Mt. Vernon Planning Board for many years in service of his local community.
John was a lover of life. He lived his life to the fullest and never slowed down. His favorite times were going to hunting camp north of Rangeley during deer and moose hunting season with his friends and family. He loved the area around Rangeley so much that he ultimately bought a family camp there on the shores of Rangeley Lake. John was also a voracious reader and consumer of literature, music, art, and film. There was not a question about a book, movie, or obscure musician that he did not have an answer ready for!
John is survived by his four children, - Chris Hagelin, of Vermont; Jesyca Hagelin and her partner Ben of Eastport, Maine; Ian Hagelin and his wife Laura of Garland, Maine; Ryee Hagelin and her husband Reilly Fitzgerald of Winthrop, Maine; and son-in-law Michael Spaulding of Readfield, Maine. He is also survived by his five grandchildren - Maebella Spaulding, Trap Spaulding, Elizabeth Hagelin, Emmalyn Hagelin, and Nora Haferman. He is also survived by his five other siblings.
John's visitation will be at Roberts Funeral Home 62 Bowdoin St. Winthrop on Monday, February 24 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon with a memorial service beginning at 12:00 noon.
Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, Maine.

For the family of John Hagelin sorry for your loss. Knew John from the Thurmont High School class of 1963. He was short and a great guy. Also, his brother and sister from Thurmont. John is in good hand of the Lord and pain free. God blessed
