I´ve never met someone so determined to dig into the depths of the scriptures and mysteries and so resolute in guiding himself and family and others onto that solar ship that plows through the heavens to the divine.
In a current world where the heavens withdraw themselves and darkness intensifies, John was a light that continues to shine in the hearts of so many.
Many are grieving now and will continue to grieve over his absence, but we will never lose the wonderful memories of our friendship, his passion for knowledge, and a childlike enthusiasm in sharing a lifetime of discoveries.
In God´s providence, everything has its season, its turn, its place. "There is a time appointed for every man, according as his works shall be" (D&C 121:25). We are told that this time of life is our "audition"-that is, we have so many years to show what we can do. John´s time was appointed, and he not only showed us what he was capable of doing but demonstrated to the Lord his faithfulness.
Thanks, John, for living a full life and sharing so much with us. In John´s unique vernacular, our hope for you would be to one day be seated with the gods and with Horus (Christ), who gives pleasant breath, life, and power; your Ba to live in heaven with Re (the Father); your body to pass through the Duat with Osiris; your Ka to be deified; and your honorable name to be firmly established in the mouth of the living ones.

John was certainly the scholar. He was a friend living in the same apartment complex as undergrads at BYU. Some years later, Janet and I enjoyed traveling to Italy with him, drawing on his great wealth of knowledge and love of antiquity.

John Hall introduced me to the study of Roman history at BYU. I was the beneficiary of his mentorship and encouragement. My association with him was pivotal in shaping my professional future. Thank you, John, for all that you did for me. I extend my sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

John Hall was a towering figure in the major regional classical organization in the United States and was during its heyday largely responsible for the flourishing of that group. It was a pleasure to work with him, and to learn something about leadership from his example. I´m sure that John now walks with God.

I have known and respected John Hall from our undergraduate days when we represented BYU in the Rhodes Scholar competition. We became colleagues after obtaining our doctorates and remained close friends during the BYU phase of our careers. As fellow Southerners, we enjoyed a warm camaraderie. I shall miss his wit as well as his warmth.

It is impossible to capture in words the sadness I feel at John's passing. He was a trusted confidant with whom the most profound ideas could be discussed. He had delightful insights and penetrating questions, and our visits were always refreshing to my soul. Dena was a tremendous companion for him, and her loss of John temporarily ends one of the great joys of his life. It is good that we all get to move along and reconnect in another existence following this one. John has just moved along before us, and therefore Dena's and our loss of him is only temporary.

For John, Jefferson, and James especially: The Classical Association of the Middle West and South, that notable national organization that your father labored so hard to fortify over many years, will hold its annual meetings in Provo next week (30 March - 1 April). I would be remiss if I did not try to display a photograph and his obituary at the meetings. Would the family allow John's old associates to honor his memory during out meetings at the Provo Marriott in this way? Please contact me and let me know. - John F. Hall III made a truly lasting contribution to the study of classical antiquity throughout the USA during a tireless career.

John Hall played an outsized role in my education and in building the academic department in which I work. I am forever changed - utterly improved - by the lessons I could internalize from his instruction and mentorship. God bless you, his family, and may his peace rest upon you.
