John Haygood Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Henderson Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. - Springfield on Jan. 27, 2026.
John Andrew Haygood Sr. 81, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and "King", transitioned into "Eternal Glory" peacefully with his loving Princes, John and Robert and Princess Tory by his side, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

John was born on May 16,1944 to the proud parents of Robbie and Minnie Haygood in Scotia South Carolina. He graduated from Scotia High School. In pursuit of his dreams, John migrated to Springfield Massachusetts at the tender age of 17. He lived with his sister Annie Mae Wilson Haygood, who pioneered the way for John. He was a smart, independent, resourceful and hardworking young man. John was invited to church one day by Sister Reed and low and behold he met his" Queen" Mabel White at Bishop Marshalls church. Mabel and John would later be betrothed by the late Bishop Bryant Robinson Sr., at gram and granddad's home, 99 Alden St. John was employed by Spaulding/Callaway for 46 yrs as a Golf Ball Technician, until he retired.

John was a man of wisdom and a few words, but when he spoke "Everybody Listened". He always knew the right things to say and gave sound advice. He had a "Heart of Gold," peaceful demeanor and full of love. John proclaimed Jesus Christ as his Lord & Savior. He was a man of faith, prayer and avidly read his bible. He always faithfully went to church when he could with bible in hand. When Dad could no longer go to church, he watched the Impact Network. His favorite preachers were Bishop Wayne T. Jackson and Bishop Sheared Presiding C.O.G.I.C. Prelate. Dad always said "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus" and "Lord Help Me"...

John was a sports enthusiast. He loved his Celtics, Yankees and Giants with passion. He was a walking sports "Encyclopedia" and he was seldom wrong. Every day was sports Sunday. Dad was always sitting in his favorite" Lazy Boy" chair with remotes in hand. The house always sounded like a sports arena. Dad was affectionately called Papa, Pop-Pop and Pop's by his grandchildren, who loved him dearly. Papa was a comedian, full of jokes and stories, he made everybody laugh. Pop's loved fish and grits and he loved to dance. Dad had great taste in clothes, music, jewelry and cologne. Dad was a Cadillac driving, smooth talking, cool, handsome and lovable man.

Special thank you to Dad's "Earth Angel" Francesca Exantus. She tirelessly gave of herself and blessed our family to the end. Much love to Aunt Rosie, who is the Maya Angelou of our family with her beautiful poems. Many thanks to Miss June and Devon for their many contributions and help...

I am heartbroken to hear of John passing. Having worked alongside him for many years,I felt like he was family.John was more than a colleague, he was a source of support and kindness, and no matter the situations he remained steady and composed. We spent a lot of time talking about sports, and it will forever remain a mystery as to how he was so accurate in his ability to pick winning teams.I haven't seen any sport analyst that even come even close to his ability yet , and I will never forget when he told me in 1978 when the Yankees was 15 games out of first place,he said" you watch, the Yankes will win the division " and sure enough they did,and as the voice of the Yankess would say "HOW ABOUT THAT" .Rest in peace John!
