John Douglas Hazelton of Charleston, SC and Melvin Village, NH, passed peacefully away at the Roper Hospice Cottage, Mt Pleasant, SC, December 28,2020. An outdoor service of thanksgiving will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel. Born in Louisville, Kentucky to Elizabeth Windell and Harry B. Hazelton on May 8, 1947, he was dearly loved by his family and friends. Doug, as he was known, graduated from the Hill School in PA and Stanford University in California. He joined the USAF as a pilot in 1970, and received an MBA from Golden Gate University while serving. Doug retired from the USAF in 1976. He had a passion for books which he never abandoned and loved the game of golf and croquet and took particular pleasure in driving his Chris Craft launch at the speed of a T-38 USAF jet across Winnipesaukee. Doug was a gentleman with a bow tie, and scholar who loved a good tale to tell. The family made many moves during his time in the USAF and over his corporate career with Conoco, DuPont and MBNA, including London as Treasurer, Conoco UK. They spent over 25 years in Wilmington, DE and then retired to Charleston, SC where they have resided the last 14 years. Throughout their journeys, Joni and Doug have been blessed to have made faithful, supportive friends in many places along the way. For more than 25 years, summers were spent at Bald Peak Colony Club, NH, where the family treasured many weekends together on Lake Winnipesaukee. Their close NH and Charleston friends have provided tremendous support in the last few years. Joni and Doug have been faithful parishioners over the years at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Delaware, St. Michaels and St. Phillips Church, Charleston. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan Harwood Hazelton; his daughter, Jennifer Windell Hazelton of Houston, Texas; son, Christopher Harwood Hazelton (Kathryn) of Boston, MA; and twin granddaughters: Caroline and Charlotte. His children and grandchildren continued to be the light of his life. Doug is also survived by his brother, Jim Hazelton (Alex); and two sisters: Lila Vultee and Susan Hilpert. The family owes a great debt of gratitude to Roper Hospice and the Roper Hospice Cottage staff for their guidance, support and loving care through this journey. They are angels all. Gifts of remembrance in Doug's name may be sent to The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 1 Carriage Lane Bldg. A, Charleston, SC 29407 or St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or Roper Hospice, 676 Wando Park Blvd, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.

Joni, Jennifer, & Christopher: I just learned of the passing of Doug. Lucy Reilly and I are both sad to hear of your loss. Your family remains as fond memories in my heart when you lived in Prairie Village, Kansas.

If you looked up the definition of "Gentleman" in the dictionary, a picture of Doug should appear. Doug was the kind of person who served as an example, they type of person you would want to emulate. I was fortune to know him personally and professionally. He will be deeply missed.

Joni and family. So sorry to read of Doug's passing. I worked with him at Dupont in Wilmington. He was a smart, witty and personable guy and I know he will be sorely missed. I moved to the Charleston area seven months ago in the midst of this pandemic. I would have called him if I had known he was here. RIP Doug.

My heartfelt thanks go out to all the Hazelton family, but Doug welcomed me to be a part of this family, for a short time in Delaware and also in London. While training for the Olympics and again working with Torvel and Dean show in London. It meant the world to me at a very vunerable time in my life. I admired his knowledge of history, passion for his family and work, and quiet smile that always made me feel calm. Jeff and I were so glad you made it to our wedding! And we share your love of SC and Charleston. To Joni, Christopher, and Jennifer I love you and please keep in touch. You are always welcome at our home (our new one floats!).

Pop, you will be so missed by Chris, me and of course, Caroline and Charlotte. The girls will remember you taking them on rides in golf carts, throwing them up over (and the into) Lake Winnipesaukee. They will always remember your love and your wonder and amazement at everything they did. I will remember the kind words and encouragement you always provided and the emails that you sent me of late, always praising my mothering of your grandchildrenthe highest compliment. To Chris- you were a shining light of love and guidance and someone to have fun and adventures with too. Chris will remember your times skiing, golf outings, epic bike rides, boating, and just having a good cocktail and trading funny stories. You will be so missed. We all love you and will remember you always.
