John Helmling Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ambrose Funeral Home - Bay City on Feb. 5, 2026.
John Gregory "Greg" Helmling, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and longtime resident of Bay County, Michigan, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was 62. Greg faced his three month battle with cancer with remarkable courage and gratitude-never bitter, always thankful for each new day he was given with the people he loved most.

Born June 1, 1963, in Wyandotte, Michigan, Greg was the firstborn son of John L. Helmling, Jr. and Marjorie Marie (Hartman) Helmling. He grew up in the Detroit area alongside his three brothers before attending Central Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism and later a master's degree in business administration.

In 1985, while interning at The Bay City Times, Greg met the love of his life, Pauline Marie Guerin. Their partnership became the center of his world. They were married on September 21, 1991, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bay City, and together they built a life filled with laughter, purpose, and unwavering devotion. Their sons, Cody Thomas and Dylan Gregory, were Greg's greatest joy, and he took immense pride in every step of their lives. Becoming a grandfather to River Archer Helmling brought him a new and profound happiness.

Greg's professional life reflected his talent for storytelling and his commitment to community. He worked for many years as a journalist and communications professional with the Midland Daily News, The Bay City Times, and Trapani Communications, where he eventually retired. He also shared his knowledge as an adjunct professor at Delta College, guiding students with the same patience and encouragement he offered everyone in his life.

Outside of work, Greg poured his energy into sports, coaching, and service. He competed in many sports over the years before shifting his focus to coaching and community involvement. He coached soccer with BASA and played a key role in the creation of the Bay Community Tennis Association's Jopke Courts at Shaw Park as a founding member. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and dedicated many years to the Bay City Central Band Boosters, serving as President for two years and chaperoning Band Camp for eight-an adventure he approached with humor and heart. He also served as assistant coach for the Bay City Central Boys' Tennis team for seven years. Through all of these roles, Greg's greatest fulfillment came from time spent with his family.

Greg is survived by his wife, Pauline; his sons, Cody and Dylan (Jada Archer); and his beloved grandson, River. He is also survived by his brothers Brian of South Lyon and Keith of Brighton; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in laws; and his father and mother in law, Thomas and Pauline Guerin. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Douglas "Doug" Helmling.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, at 7:00 PM at Ambrose Funeral Home, 1200 Garfield Ave., Bay City, MI. Fr. Dale Orlik will preside. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Angiosarcoma Awareness, Inc., the University of Michigan Sarcoma Clinic, or to the Wishes of the Family in care of Pauline Helmling.

The family welcomes stories, photos, and messages of support on Greg's Tribute Wall at ambrosefuneralchapel.com.

The family have my deepest condolences. I met John briefly as we shared the upcoming baby River's entrance into this world. My prayers are with the family.

My condolences to Greg's family, friends and community. So sorry for your loss. Greg and I worked together and CM Life then largely lost touch ... except for that time when we ran into each other working as journalists in Saudi Arabia during the first Gulf crisis. We each were stunned but proud to see another CM Lifer there.

Sad to hear this news. Greg and I went to school together at CMU, and eventually worked together at the Midland Daily News. Greg was a tremendous athlete. I played softball and basketball with him. Tough competitor. Again, I'm saddened by this news. God's peace to you at this difficult time. Chris Stevens
