Lee Funeral Home - OwingsJohn Leroy Herbert, lovingly known as "Butch," peacefully passed away on November 10, 2025, at his home in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on July 2, 1943, to William and Iona Herbert of District Heights, Maryland. He graduated from Suitland High School in 1961 and later earned an Associate Degree in Business from Prince George's Community College. He also completed a United States Government apprenticeship as a certified machinist and welder.
In his younger years, Butch enjoyed swimming, hunting, and dancing. His roller-skating talent was so exceptional that he was once invited to join the Roller Derby in Chicago. A lifelong outdoorsman, he found great joy in goose, duck, deer, elk, and pheasant hunting.
Butch began his career at H & H Machine Company, his father's machine shop in District Heights. Later, he and his two sons founded Quality Erectors, Inc. His expertise as a U.S. Government subcontractor took him across Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia, with his craftsmanship evident in landmarks such as the U.S. Capitol, the Holocaust Museum, the Washington Monument, the White House, the Pentagon, Camden Yards, and the Commanders Stadium.
As his reputation grew, his work expanded nationwide and internationally, including projects in Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Florida, Canada, and most recently Cyprus. Highly respected in his field, Butch often served as a trusted consultant to engineers and continued working diligently until just two months before his passing. He truly believed in working hard and playing hard.
Butch worshiped at Emmanuel Church in Huntingtown, Maryland, which he considered his home church. One of his greatest passions was supporting Night to Shine, a worldwide prom experience for individuals with special needs, created by the Tim Tebow Foundation and hosted by Emmanuel Church.
He loved hosting card nights for his friends and enjoyed cruising, spending time with his family, and especially eating crabs on Sundays-simple traditions that brought everyone together and filled his heart with joy.
Butch is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carol Ann; his children and their spouses-Kimberly & Chris, Bill & Sharon, and Stuart & Teresa; his grandchildren Phillip, Candice, Shawn, Adelina, Matthew, Sofia, Austin, Jack, and Dylan; and his great-grandchildren Pace, Ava, and Aden. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Iona Herbert, and his sisters, Lois Hibbert and Jacqueline Bradford.
Butch lived a life marked by generosity, kindness, and unwavering love for his family. He was a giver in every sense of the word, someone who supported, encouraged, and blessed others without needing any recognition. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and the many lives he touched.
