TROY - John Herkert, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2026, leaving behind a life markedby service, dedication and a wonderful sense of humor that will be deeply missed.
He was born on April 19, 1931, in Cleveland, OH.
John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years as an air traffic controller, a role that reflected his calm demeanor, sharp focus, and sense of responsibility.
John was married to the love of his life, Eleanor (Farrell) Herkert, for 65 years until her passing in 2019. Their marriage was a true partnership built on love, devotion and shared laughter.
For more than 60 years, John was deeply involved with the Boy Scouts of America, mentoring generations of young people and promoting values of leadership, integrity and community service. He also worked for the Red Cross for 15 years after retiring from the Nashua Corporation.
Following retirement, he volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy where his kindness and friendly nature was appreciated by all.
He is survived by his children, Donna Auxter, Cheryl Herkert, John Herkert (Kim) and Ken Herkert;
four grandchildren, Nick and Sarah Auxter, Ashley Herkert (Dave Nesich) and Brett Herkert (Megan);
3 great grandchildren, Zari Auxter, Noah Nesich and Brooke Herkert.
Visiting hours will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at the New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, NY.
