A VMI friend of my deceased husband Gerald Smallwood, He became a good friend of ours. He spent quality time with us at our beach house. One time I took him to have tea with the queen, Barbara Hird who played Queen Elizabet I in "The Lost Colony." They had a delightful tete a tete.

John and I met at UVA in 1960, became great friends that continued until his passing. We roomed together on summer at UVA and our great appreciation on art and music gave us much to talk about. His knowledge was infinite and so was his constant devotion to his friends. Ronald W. Davis; Richmond, VA

John was an incredible, positive influence in my life. Most memorable was a seven-week tour around the world in 1969 when I was a junior at UVa. John introduced me to his many friends around the globe, including Mike Scott in Kuala Lumpur, Karen and Mehmet Tumay in Istanbul and Bob Cuppy in Venice. I miss him, and cherish my memories of my visits with him, and think of him whenever I look at the souvenirs from that trip that grace my living room.

Herring has been a magical, inspirational figure in my life from my earliest childhood, and he was a beloved friend of my father's from before I was born. He is one of the most remarkably marvelous and exceptional human beings I have had the fortune to encounter. May his memory be a blessing.

John was still offering me tea out of centuries-old cups and saucers right up until a few weeks before his passing when I would visit and bring him his favorite butter pecan ice cream! Rest in peace.

John Herring has been a special friend since I first met him in 1973. I was struggling in business school then and his support and artistic ventures helped keep me going through to my degree. My house is full of Imari, a collection started with John's careful encouragement. A fine man and a great loss to us all.

John was a special friend when I was at the University of Virginia. We went to concerts, enjoyed museums, good food, and conversation. He was truly a gentleman in this non-gentle world. He will be missed.

My husband, Jerry Smallwood, was a fellow graduate of VMI and was a lifelong friend. He visited us here in Kitty Hawk, NC and impressed all our friends with his most interesting and descriptive conversations.. I was looking forward to one more visit with him here at our oceanfront home. Jane Smallwood

John was a dear friend and very special. My knowledge of art and antiques is greater and my life is richer because of my friendship and association with John since the mid-1960s. I shall miss him.

My condolence to all. The loss of someone so special and admired can bring much grief and heartache. But the legacy he left may it bring wonderful memories to all, and comfort from the loss. His life had special mightiness. Psalm 90: 10,Take care.

My husband and I both worked for John Herring at Newcomb Hall in the mid-60s, and have stayed in touch ever after. He would pop up in Washington, give us an out-of-the- blue phone call (while housesitting for some acquaintance), and insist on taking us out to dinner. He was the kindest, gentlest man I know, soft-spoken, but who could whistle almost any classical tune you could name. His artistic vision and cultured taste will be sorely missed by his numerous friends around the world.

John was a good guy and a chapter unto himself. It is saddening that the last page of his chapter has been turned.

John Herring, a family friend, will be missed. We remember him fondly for his unique personality, his charisma, his engaging stories of places visited near and far, and his connoisseurship.
He was supportive of my father Larry Powell at the start of his more than a quarter century career at Newcomb Hall. They shared a love of classical music and the arts as well as of helping each new cohort of students entering the University.
Rest in peace, John. I can hear you whistling!

Mr. Herring was a dedicated advisor to the students in the UVa Theta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega for years. He would show up for events as an encouraging figure, watching each new batch of brotherhood unfold with interest, giving kind words, advice, or just good conversation.
Thanks, Mr. Herring, for all your years of Service!

Mr Heering's personal and successful efforts year after year to bring world class classical music ensembles- The Moscow State Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra ... to play in old U-Hall was the best thing about Charlottesville for decades. A miracle. Thanks john!

I am sorry to hear of his passing. I also worked with him in Newcomb Hall, and he was responsible for me learning about APO Service Fraternity, and nurtured my love of all kinds of teas.
