John Kevin Hinfey

John K. (Jake) Hinfey passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, surrounded by family at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born the youngest of three sons, Francis P. (deceased) and Father Donald J., S.J., to Patrick J. and Jean (née Ferris) Hinfey on August 16, 1935, in New York City.
Mr. Hinfey grew up in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx and was educated at Manhattan College High School and Manhattan College. From 1955 to 1959, Mr. Hinfey was a professional baseball player under contract to the NY Yankee organization. During that period, he also served in the U.S. Army and was, on two occasions, awarded citations for meritorious service by the First U.S. Army Commanding General.
He entered the financial services industry in the fall of 1959, where he became the youngest home office manager of one of the largest Savings and Loan Associations in New York State, and he continued to work in various segments of that industry until his retirement in 1999. In September 1961, Mr. Hinfey married Mary T. Mosiello, and their union produced their four children. Jake and Mary spent many wonderful years raising their family in Oakland, NJ. Mary passed away on February 1, 2000.
Mr. Hinfey also represented two major Life Insurance Companies in their estate, business and pension planning divisions. In 1976 he joined the Anchor National Companies as the marketing officer for their Northeastern States Region. In 1982 he accepted an invitation to move to the home office in Scottsdale, AZ, where he became a senior officer and member of the Board of Directors of both Anchor National Life and Anchor National Financial Services.
In 1987 he and two other senior officers of the Anchor Companies founded an NASD broker/dealer firm called United Planners Financial Services of America. It was from that firm that Mr. Hinfey retired in the summer of 1999 as President and Chief Executive Officer.
Mr. Hinfey was a loving and devoted father and papa, an avid sports enthusiast, and remained a loyal fan of his former employer, the New York Yankees. He was a member of Camelback Golf Club for almost 35 years and thoroughly enjoyed his time there, including the many friendships and acquaintances established over those years.
Jake is survived by his three daughters: Mary Beth Hollaender (Walter "Dutch"), Susan and Jennifer, his son, John (Jessie), and four grandchildren: Ryan and Lauren Hollaender, and Jacob and Sean Hinfey. We are comforted knowing that he is reunited with family and friends that have gone before him.
Services: Visitation will be Tuesday, February 7, 2023, from 4-7:00 PM, Rosary at 6 PM, at Messinger Indian School Mortuary. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at 10:00 AM, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, 7655 E. Main St., Scottsdale.
