Obituary of John J. Holmes
In Loving Memory of John James Holmes
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved John J. Holmes, who left us suddenly at the age of 61... A man whose kindness, generosity, and unwavering spirit touched the lives of all who knew him, John's legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched.
Born June 20, 1964, to James and Margaret "Peggy" (née Fahy) Holmes, John was the second of four children (Vincent, Roger, and Mary). He proudly embraced his Irish roots, with his father hailing from Ballymachola, County Mayo, and his mother from New Quay, County Clare.
John grew up in
Roselle, New Jersey, where he built friendships that remained strong throughout his life. He graduated from Abraham Clark High School and later attended Union County Vocational School, where following in his father's footsteps he studied mechanics. He joined the Union Fire Department in 1999, where he served as a Diesel Mechanic with pride and dedication whether he was changing your flat tire or plowing your driveway, John and his countless acts of kindness touched those around him, and John's life was a testament to the power of love, hope, and community.
In 1985, John met Kathleen, the love of his life. From that moment, they were inseparable, soulmates. They married in October 1991, building a marriage defined by love, loyalty, and laughter. Together they were true partners who always supported one another. They had a bond together that most would envy. They were blessed with three sons, James, Damian, and Rory. John was totally devoted to his boys and took great joy in watching them grow and taking part in their activities whether as a coach in Little League, Teener League, or a proud parent cheering them on in Wrestling, Swimming and Football. He cherished family moments and as they grew he especially loved impromptu bike trips to the Catskills, just him and his boys.
John was a big kid at heart. Many called him a gentle giant. He had a rare ability to bring light into any room and make people of all ages feel seen, heard, and valued, no matter their circumstances. His warmth and generosity knew no bounds, and his ability to inspire others will never be forgotten. His door was always open and he was always willing to lend a hand. John's life was a testament to the power of family, love and community.
Deeply involved in his community, John contributed to numerous organizations, including the Cryan Association, Nugent Association, Union County St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, the Irish American Society, the Union County Police & Fire Pipes & Drums, the 5th Quarter Club, and the Knights of Columbus. His commitment to community and belief in tradition were unmatched...
Above all else, John considered himself blessed by his family and friends. He valued the simple pleasures in life, watching the sunset over the mountains on a bike ride with his boys, having the craic with good company, a cold Michelob Ultra, and the Dallas Cowboys.
He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, son and brother, a loyal friend and a steadfast presence in the lives of all who knew him.
John is predeceased by his beloved mother, Peggy, his brother Roger and his in-laws Patrick J. Matthews and Grace Matthews McDermott. He is survived by his devoted father, James "Pops" Holmes, his beloved wife and lifelong love, Kathleen; his cherished sons, James 'Jimmy', Damian, Roger "Rory" (Kiera) of whom he was immensely proud.
