John Houston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 5 to Feb. 11, 2024.
John Leslie Houston (Jack), age 86, died peacefully at home on January 15, 2024, with his family at his side. During his 28-year career at the Chicago Tribune, Jack was an award-winning reporter and assistant metropolitan editor. He is survived by his wife Joy, son Bradley, daughter Brenda Knight, two granddaughters and two great grandsons.

Jack grew up in Oak Park and River Forest. Before joining the Tribune, he was editor of Power Life, a weekly religious publication for teens. In 2000 Jack spent a term teaching journalism at Daystar University in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2001 he and his wife moved to Antigua, Guatemala, where they carried out volunteer work on behalf of Fourth Presbyterian Church. They also wrote regularly for a local tourist magazine, the Revue.

Jack and Joy returned to the States in 2012 and traveled often, including back to Guatemala, where they spent November and December of 2023. Family and Christian service were Jack's priorities, for which he was loved and respected and will be remembered.

Joy - I am so sadden to hear of Jack's passing. I have thought of you often over the years always wishing you well. I have many wonderful memories of him including church mission trips to Nicaragua and a brief meet up in Athens during Holy Week as you traveled with the Fourth Pres church group. Let all those wonderful memories fill your days with sunshine.
In friendship and with prayers - Susan

Joy,
I am sad to see that Jack has passed.
We have thought of you so many times over the years, thinking we need to try to get together again. We always referred to you two as our "mission angels" the way you took us under your wings and taught us legions...not just about mission but humanity, humility, and empowerment. We have fond memories of our (only) chicken bus ride with you, the alfombras of Holy week, your lovely homes in Antiqua, Detroit, Chicago and all the ruins and history you shared with us. You were our "insider guides" and friends. You shared much of yourselves with us during our visits over the years, making us always want to find our way back to you. Your kindness and wisdom seeped into us and our chldren. I'm sorry we didn't try to visit sooner. If you have an email address and would be interested in being in touch, our email is [email protected]
You are in our thoughts.
Warmly,
Cindy and Dan Kuhn
