John Howard Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Krause Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Inc. - Capitol Drive on Dec. 9, 2025.
John M. Howard passed away peacefully at home on November 22, 2025, surrounded by love and his children.

Born in Beloit, Wisconsin, he earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, followed by a Master of Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

John moved to Milwaukee with his wife and sweetheart, Sara Beth Howard (née Kirchhoff), with whom he shared 32 years of marriage until her passing in 2009. Together, they built a warm, loving home and raised their two children, James Pearson and Chelsea Lynn, who adored them both.

John spent his accomplished career with Firstar Bank (now U.S. Bank), where he served as Executive Vice President of Mid-Market and Large Corporate Banking. He later played an integral role in helping to open BMO Harris in Wisconsin, serving as a Market Manager for Commercial Mid-Market Banking. He took great pride not only in his work, but in the personal and professional relationships he built along the way. Known as a generous mentor to young bankers just beginning their careers, he was valued for his steady demeanor, sharp wit, professionalism, and keen intelligence. His insight and integrity earned him deep respect and a reputation as one of the most trusted voices in the local market.

Passionate about encouraging financial literacy among young people, John volunteered with Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, serving as both a mentor and board member. He also found great purpose as a member of the Golden Angels, offering guidance, support, and opportunities to small companies just starting out. His involvement in both organizations reflected his lifelong values-lifting others, sharing wisdom, and investing in people.

A true Wisconsinite at heart, John loved weekly fish fries, "putzing" in his beautiful yard, cheering for the Brewers and Packers, and spending unhurried time with his children, friends, and family. He had a genuine appreciation for music and dancing, never missing a chance to tap his foot or move along to a good tune-especially when surrounded by people he loved.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Beth Howard; his parents, Beatrice Mae (née Hoey) and Ralph Pearson Howard; and his brother, Timothy Howard.

He is survived by his two children, James and Chelsea; his sister, Lisa; his brother, Kenneth; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends who felt like family.

Those who knew John will remember his kindness, wisdom, gentle strength, and warm, playful sense of humor. He had a gift for storytelling and an unmistakable presence that made others feel at ease. Remarkably intelligent and deeply humble, he was always ready with thoughtful advice and often armed with a well-timed story from his days as a banker. He was composed and steady, yet delightfully goofy when the moment called for it-always generous with his time, his heart, and his guidance. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at J&B's Blue Ribbon Bar & Grill, 5230 West Bluemound Road on Sunday, December 14, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Food and drinks will be available and the Packers game will be on. In true John fashion, all are invited to gather, share stories, and enjoy one another's company in his honor.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in John's memory be made to Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, a cause he so deeply believed in.
