John Eugene Humphrey, aged 90 years, was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, an only (and spoiled) child to Jesse Humphrey and Pearl Hopkinson Humphrey. At age 16, he went to work for Betts Motors, eventually the Mercedes dealership, and on New Years Eve, at age 21, he became a police officer for Colorado Springs Police Department, where he worked a total of 12 years as a police officer and corporal. Mr. Humphrey was also a police officer with the Anaheim, California Police Department and a trooper with the California Highway Patrol for 11 years.
From 1980 to 1985, John was Chief of Police in Trenton, Missouri and from 1986 to 1996, John was Chief of Police in Manitou Springs, Colorado, where he retired and then moved to Las Vegas, Nevada.
After his retirement, he experimented with other jobs: driving a bus for the RTC, courier for the Chamber of Commerce, sports book writer and court reviewer for the Nevada Attorney General. In 2002 he then landed back in law enforcement as a civilian at Las Vegas Metro Police Department for fourteen years and a final retirement.
Mr. Humphrey was a graduate of the FBI National Academy, 137th Class, and a past member of IACP and Missouri Police Chief's Association.
Mr. Humphrey was preceded in death by his son, Terry Joseph Humphrey, and his parents, Pearl Hopkinson Humphrey and John "Jesse" Humphrey. He is survived by his wife, Mary Humphrey, a son, Wayne Humphrey of Bonita Springs, Florida, and daughters, Jami Kacperski of Fort Worth, Texas, Kristi Foster of Los Angeles, California, and Barbara Hatch of Phenix City, Alabama, as well as seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
John always enjoyed a good practical joke.
