John J. Hunt, age 96, passed away on January 21, 2026, at his home in Addison, Illinois, surrounded by family. Born on August 27, 1929, in Manhattan, New York, John leaves behind a remarkable legacy marked by his unwavering service, discipline, and profound care for others, which spanned both his military and civilian lives.

A proud Chief Petty Officer (CPO) in the United States Navy, John embodied the values of the military throughout his life. Precision, integrity, and a staunch commitment to doing things the right way were hallmarks of his character. His temperament reflected these standards—calm, observant, exacting, and acutely aware of the world around him. John had an extraordinary ability to pay attention not only to people but also to systems and patterns, ensuring everything functioned optimally.

Throughout his military service and into the following decades, John was part of a generation that played a critical role in advancing modern medicine. After his discharge in 1972, he continued his work in the healthcare field during the 1970s and 1980s as a trauma coordinator. In this capacity, he contributed significantly to the development and organization of trauma systems that continue to influence patient care today. His medical knowledge, earned through experience and a deep sense of responsibility, undoubtedly saved lives and helped guide the transition of trauma care into the structured systems relied upon in modern practice.

John was a firm advocate for preparedness, accountability, and teamwork. He dedicated himself to mentoring others, sharing his extensive knowledge freely, and recognizing that progress required both experience and adaptability. In many respects, he quietly shaped the world as we know it today, with a legacy that will endure.

In his later years, John faced the challenge of hearing loss, which some mistook for cognitive decline. However, those who truly knew him understood that his mind remained as sharp and aware as ever. Communication became challenging—not due to confusion, but rather because he could not always hear. With the assistance of a communication device, he was able to restore meaningful conversations, reconnect with loved ones, and find peace in knowing he was heard, especially in his final days.

John's passing was a gentle transition, understood by his family, who knew that he was at ease, comforted by connection and secure in the knowledge that his life's work and values would carry on in those he loved.

John is survived by his daughters, Karen and Laura; grandchildren, Buzz, William, and Kyle; and great-grandchildren, Andrew and Patrick. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Jean Hunt.

John J. Hunt will be remembered for his service, discipline, compassion, and unwavering commitment to doing what was right. His legacy will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known him.
