JOHN HURLEY Obituary

HURLEY, John F. X. Of Melrose, formerly of Neponset and Revere, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on March 2, 2021 after a long illness. John was born in Neponset on July 26, 1936.

John proudly served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He was stationed in Berlin, where he spent his time wrestling, learning a few key German phrases, and working as a corporal. After leaving the army, he became a double Eagle, receiving both his undergraduate and Master's degrees from Boston College. With his degrees and lifelong love of numbers, he worked many years in finance, retiring as Business Manager of Revere Public Schools. He also started and ran his own tax practice for over twenty years. Fondly known as the Father of the Revere Kindergarten Program, he improved the lives of children for generations to come by rallying the community and making sure the school district offered Kindergarten in Revere in a timely manner. He was also a devoted public servant, where he served on the Revere City Council for eleven years.

He loved God, his country, and his community, but most of all he loved his family. He was first and foremost a dedicated husband. He married the love of his life, Virginia Schettino of Revere, in 1964. Devoted father to Dr. Christine Hurley and husband William Wright of Melrose, MA, Kara Berger and husband Steve of Dallas, TX, John Hurley of New London, NH and Virginia Thompson and husband Tim of Salisbury, MA. Cherished grandfather of Lily, Emma, Jonathan and Sienna Wright, Owen, Emmett, Ava and Luke Berger, Nina and Maya Hurley, and Ginger and Hurley Thompson. He was never too busy to help anyone, especially his children and grandchildren.

He was the son of the late Joseph B. and Mary (Doocey) Hurley and the loving brother of Nancy (Hurley) Karis of Holliston, MA and Judith Hurley of Neponset, MA and the late Joseph, Rita, Arthur, Bobby Hurley and Elizabeth (Hurley) Connell. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He will be fiercely missed.

A Visitation will be held at the Paul Buonfiglio & Sons-Bruno Funeral Home, 128 Revere Street, REVERE, on Friday, March 5, 2021 from 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception Church, 133 Beach Street, Revere, at 10:30 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, capacity limits are in effect. We ask that you keep your visit brief to allow others to pay their respects to the family. Masks and social distancing are required while in the funeral home and at church. Interment will be in Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:45 PM.

Sincerest condolences to Virginia and the family with the passing of John. He was a wonderful man in every way and I had the pleasure of not only knowing him but, also, being connected with him through my tenure as a School Committee woman with Revere Public Schools. Blessed to have known him and he will certainly be missed by all his many friends. May he be at peace.
