John Steven Hutmacher

He Played the Piano, Solved Problems, and Helped People-Often All in the Same Day.

John Steven Hutmacher, 81, passed away peacefully after a long battle with COPD, surrounded by his family.
John was born December 14, 1944, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Rosalie Hackenbracht. At eighteen months old he was adopted by John J. Hutmacher and Margaret (MacKintosh) Hutmacher, who had waited more than ten years for a child. They raised him and his sister, Margaret, in Orange County, California.

John's connection to music began early. Soon after bringing him home, his mother took him into a music store. Seeing a piano, he pointed and exclaimed "Pi-no!" She enrolled him in lessons, and his talent quickly became clear. John had a natural ear for music and remained a pianist and organist throughout his life. He studied at the Conservatory School of Music in Detroit and later played the Wurlitzer organ at Disneyland in California. He continued to play piano and organ for special events and church services throughout his life.

John was curious by nature and enjoyed understanding how things worked. Over the course of his life he wore many hats, working in the shipping industry, technology and software, and in forensic imaging, contributing to early applications of electronic imaging used in scientific and investigative fields. He also served in the United States Navy in the late 1960s.

In 1975 John met the love of his life, Margo, and her eight-year-old son, Johnny, who soon became his own. John and Margo married in Southern California in 1976 and later moved to Federal Way, Washington, where they raised their son and built a life together that spanned 50 years.

Later in life John felt called to work more directly with people. He completed his career as a funeral director at Greenwood Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Renton, where he helped families through difficult moments with patience and care.

John had a warm, distinguished voice, a quick sense of humor, and a natural way with words. If someone mentioned a question or problem in passing, he would often return later with research, articles, or contacts that might help. He enjoyed learning and took satisfaction in helping others move forward.

More than anything, people remember John for his heart. He believed in encouraging others and did what he could to give people a boost when they needed it.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Margo Hutmacher; his son Johnny Hutmacher of Everett, Washington, and daughter-in-law Nicole Hutmacher; and his grandchildren Samuel and David Hutmacher.
John lived a life shaped by music, curiosity, and care for others. Like a musician bringing notes together into harmony, he spent his life connecting people, ideas, and opportunities. The music he made in the lives of others will continue to play on.

A visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 12:00 p.m. and a reception at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Edline-Yahn & Covington Funeral Chapel. Following the reception, a procession will travel to Tahoma National Cemetery for the committal service with military honors.
