John Hynd II Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 8, 2025.
John Steel Hynd II, born August 21st, 1950, in Carson City , Nevada, passed away November 2nd, 2025. He is preceded in death by his wife, Carol, who passed away in 2020. Together, they shared a partnership of adventure, laughter, and love.

He was the son of John Steel Hynd and Ada Almina Jensen, both immigrants and was later blessed to have a devoted stepfather, James "Buddy" Phillips, all three built their lives with hard work and determination, values John carried throughout his own life.

A graduate of Chico State College, Class of 1972. John was known for his sharp mind, quick wit, and unwavering principles. After college, he moved his family to Colorado where he proudly called home for the rest of his life.

In 1976, he was hired by the FAA as an air traffic controller. In 1981, he served as a determined FAA PATCO Union President, standing up for fairness and integrity in the workplace; so much so that he was fired by the then President of the United States for his convictions. It was a testament to his courage, his loyalty to his peers, and his belief in standing firm.

A true Scotsman in heart and heritage, he was a proclaimed course duffer and "tried to play" some of the best. An avid hunter and fisherman both on the ocean and along the rocky mountain streams, John found peace and purpose in the outdoors. His stories from the field and the water were legendary among friends and family.

In his later years, John became a familiar face to his neighbors as a daily walker, greeting everyone with warmth and genuine kindness; everyone, he called friends.

He is survived by his children, Justin and Sara; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, all of whom were the light of his life. As well as Carol's daughters; Debra, Heidi, Lori, and Wendy.

John will be remembered for his strength, humor, integrity, and the quiet way he made the world around him better. A remeberance of life to be held at All Veterans Funeral, 11/13 at 1000.
