John Ford Obituary

John "Jack" Ford

June 28, 1942 ~

October 17, 2025

North Salt Lake-Jack Ford, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, accomplished journalist and pilot, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, at the age of 83. Jack's life was defined by curiosity, service, love of family, and a lifelong commitment to telling the truth with clarity and compassion.

Jack was born on June 28, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from West High School, where he served as a class officer and began developing the leadership and communication skills that would later define his career. Jack became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during his teenage years; however, he did not become a fully active member until later in life.

Jack began working at KSL-TV in 1963, starting as a cameraman and eventually rising to become one of the station's most respected reporters. Over nearly 30 years, he became KSL's legal, courts, and aviation specialist, covering some of Jack's most high-profile cases, including the Mark Hofmann forgeries and bombing case, and the infamous Ted Bundy trials. Known for his accuracy, composure, and insight, Jack's reporting left an enduring mark on Utah's journalistic landscape.

Jack's dedication to truthful, impactful journalism earned him many accolades including the American Bar Association's "Gavel Award" for The Justices, a documentary of Utah's Justice of the Peace system, and the "National Headliner Award" for continuing coverage of the Gary Gilmore saga.

As a licensed pilot with his eye for innovation, Jack launched Air Alert in 1967, providing live traffic updates from the air - a groundbreaking effort that brought a new dimension to broadcast news. His aviation expertise earned him unique opportunities, including flying with both the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds while covering stories about the elite military demonstration teams.

After retiring from KSL in 1992, he continued his commitment to public service for 16 years as the Public Information Officer for the Utah Department of Corrections; serving as a trusted voice and steady presence through many sensitive and high-profile matters.

Jack married Jacquelyn Russell in 1963, and together they raised three children who survive him. In 1992, he married Christine Foukas, his beloved wife and best friend. Together, Jack and Chris built a life filled with love, adventure, and laughter. They shared a passion for boating at Lake Powell and Flaming Gorge, skiing, golfing, and most of all, enjoying time with their blended family and many cherished friends.

Jack will be remembered for his sharp intellect, deep curiosity, steady presence, and the quiet strength with which he approached every chapter of life. He was a man who chased the horizon – whether in a news helicopter, on the open water, or through the lens of a camera – always striving to bring light, understanding, and connection to those around him.

He is survived by his wife Chris; his children Scott, Jeff (Alisha), and Heidi (Floyd); five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Chris' four children: Josh (Jenny), Zack (Tia), Jennifer (Kent), and Christopher (Randi), along with 14 grandchildren who affectionately called him "Papa Jack".

Per Jack's wishes there will no viewing or funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Utah Food Bank or a charity of your choice, in honor of Jack's lifelong dedication to public service.
